A large tree has fallen across the carriageway and caused damage to a fence and street light in Binstead this afternoon (Bank Holiday Monday).
Pitts Lane, off Binstead Hill, has been completely blocked as a result of the incident, which occurred at just before 15:40.
Eyewitnesses say they had a crack followed by a loud crash just seconds later as the Horse Chestnut unexpectedly smashed to the ground.
Locals say it is amazing that no one was injured as the route is popular with dog walkers, particularly on a Bank Holiday.
Some residents have had vehicular access to their properties blocked by the fall with one property sustaining a damaged fence.
It’s thought the tree snapped at the bottom of the trunk, rather than having been uprooted.
It follows a similar tree fall on the same corner several years ago.
Island Roads has arrived on scene to assess the situation – with contractors Groundsells expected to be requested to attend in due course.
Access to residential properties, Holy Cross Church and Ladies Walk is via Church Road only until further notice.
It’s been a quite windy day, what happened to the
mini heatwave.
It’s a horse chestnut which has succumbed to some decease, let’s hope that there is no knee jerk reaction with regard to the beautiful majestic beeches nearby.
