Could the sound of a town crier soon be ringing out on the Isle of Wight once again?
A proposal has been put forward in Ventnor, for the honorary position.
The town council will discuss the item tonight (Monday), at a meeting from 19:00, at Salisbury Gardens.
There are currently no town criers on the Island.
Sandown’s crier, John Davies, died last year and Steve King, who retired in 2021 after 12 years of service representing Yarmouth and Ryde, died earlier this year.
In May, town criers across the country proclaimed the accession of King Charles III.
The role in Ventnor would be voluntary and, if approved, the only costs budgeted for the role by the town council would go towards the crier’s uniform or livery.

Why??? The noise they make is terrifying
And its 2023 not 1823
Will Nixon from Hursts, there can’t be anyone else, I’ll even put a petition on my Facebook page
William Nixon would make a good town cryer he did a jubilee proclimation in the high street last year he was very good.
Will Nixon is the man for the job , a much loved & respected member of our wonderful community.
There are some traditions that should truly be laid to rest ! And this is definitely one of them !!!!!
Nah!! Don’t bother, we all have mobile phones
…hence the need for a town crier who provides better coverage than the likes of EE, O2, Three and Vodaphone. Another vote for Will.
No thanks, just leave it out, the last thing you want is someone shouting loudly about nothing and scaring young kids and dogs to death.
Yes…of course! because that’s clearly the thing that’s wrong in our world
A terrific and fun initiative. Ventnor is surely the place to re-enact and preserve something of truly historical value. It will further raise the profile of this highly unusual and artistic town which hosts the hugely popular Fringe Festival
Will is the only one for the job .
