199 cases of COVID-19 have now been confirmed on the Isle of Wight, according to the latest statistical information available from Public Health England.
Previously, the total sat at 198 but a further case has been confirmed in today’s (Saturday’s) data. The local infection rate now sits at 140.6.
NHS England report that there have now been 38 coronavirus deaths in hospital, with the Office for National Statistics confirming a further 26 people have died in the community. This brings the total Isle of Wight death toll to 64, as of today.
35 hospital recoveries have been recorded, but it is unknown how many people within the community have recovered from COVID-19 after testing positive.
Nationally, the coronavirus crisis is being brought under control with a steady decline in the number of deaths and new cases.
I’m a key worker in the retail sector and over the last couple of days there has been a huge amount of tourists visiting (and staying) on the island, and not even hiding the fact. Forget Dominic Cummings,what’s happening on the island is an absolute disgrace and only going to make it a lot worse.

I am also a retail worker on the island. Last week I was on holiday and because I live a block away from Sandown beach, get to see it daily. I also took a drive to Freshwater Bay, the following day to Ventnor beach and the day after to Ryde and at all four beaches I didn’t think it were all that busy, worse case probably a 5 meter distancing. I also noticed the about 1 in 3 vehicle registration were IOW/Hampshire and of the non-IOW/Hampshire registrations, how do we know that they aren’t residents on the island. I am a resident on IOW, and my vehicle isn’t registered here.
Anyway, no, including the bank holiday Monday, I didn’t see many people at all on the beaches.
A group of cyclists were hanging about consulting maps last Friday, one came along and stopped and asked me directions, proving they were not local people.
I feel bad for anyone trying to keep themselves safe, I am not really classed as in the vulnerable group but have problems with chest complaints, so a worry for me especially too.
A big thank you to all the people not listening to the guidelines, and to those who think it’s all fake and lies, here comes that 2nd spike.
Lockdown is NOT over. Only a few rules are being relaxed.

The island roads are back to pre lockdown numbers of cars. Sandown was heaving along the seafront like a normal day as was ryde. Nobody is listening anymore and it’s only going to get busier from Monday as everyone thinks they can meet up with anyone. I really hope we don’t see a big increase in cases but I’m sure we will. Before anyone says what was I doing out it was an essential journey I do every day.
Strange that you say Sandown beach was heaving because I only live a block away from Sandown beach and as I was on holiday for the week, was down there for a walk for most of the time I was there at various intervals in the day and I really didn’t notice that it were so busy that I could define it as heaving.
I agree with you Sandown beach was not busy at all and they were staying apart the beach bar was busy all drinking on path way. Police were there talking to them

Let’s be honest, the lsland was never in lockdown. Selfish second home owners and holiday makers have been coming and going for the last 10 weeks. As an lsland we had the best opportunity to fight virus.So who shall we blame when we have to go into a regional lockdown which will have to be tougher than this one.Everyone trying to get buisness’s ready to open will have to close again
Utter misguided rubbish Mandy. The Island has one of the lowest counts of official Covid 19 cases and associated deaths across the country. This was the position at the beginning of the breakout and remains as of now. An amazing stat given that we have a high percentage of our population over retirement age and vulnerable to the virus. This is a testament to Islanders themselves abiding to the rules and visitors and second homeowners staying away and respecting the Island and lockdown restrictions. The Island is managed under a single NHS trust which to date has not been overwhelmed.
Allchie , you’re misguided if you think there are no visitors here, l hope in a few months time you can say l told you so . I just think as an lsland we should have locked down properly we may have done even better.
Mandy – I never said that was the case. There will always be some exceptions either idiots who ignore the lockdown rules (out of an Island population of 147,000 there will be a percentage who don’t care and who are probably more responsible for our small outbreaks) and others on the mainland who think they can sneak over for their own reasons including supporting vulnerable relatives. What I am saying to you is that it is not right that you blame trippers and second homeowners for everything that has happened in terms of the outbreak to date. That is where you are misguided. I know that mainlanders were being questioned at the ports and sent away if not essential travel before rules were relaxed. Stay safe.

Get a grip Peter. The relaxation in rules allows you to travel further afield but do not allow you to stay away from your main residence. There should no hotels or holiday accommodations on the Island open for business. Camper vans etc. Trying to come over will be questioned at the ports. Stay vigilant and report anything you might see that doesn’t look right.

What pandemic? What death toll? What idiots! Give an inch and take ten miles that’s the extent of the brain capacity of most berks in this country and definitely this island too. I can’t believe the extent of the stupidity going on, the wreck less actions putting us NHS workers lives at risk all over again with no thought what so ever! Laughing in our faces but want our full support when they realise the mistakes they’re making. This virus is stil here and will remain until a vaccine is found and implemented.
