Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team riders Jerry and Julie Cooper competed in the second round of the Crit City e-Cycling series last Wednesday, with some success.
The course comprised of 12 laps of the ‘Downtown Dolphin’ circuit, a reverse of the previous week’s course.
The veteran riders, who were hoping to improve on their first-round performances, both set off at a fast pace.
Jerry, riding in the Men’s (C) Category race, initially stuck with the leaders but the several steep climbs each lap began to take its toll. A small group started to pull away and the field of 50+ riders split. Cooper dug in and pushed on at over 25mph with the second group, eventually winning an impressive bunch sprint to finish in the top 10.
Julie, who competed in the Women’s (D) Category race, remained in the front group from the off. A solo rider pulled away and lapped the field, but she was later disqualified for ‘irregular power output’. In the final 500m, Julie was building up speed for the sprint to the line when 1 rider went early using her ‘power up’ and managed to keep ahead of the bunch.
Despite chasing her down and closing the gap, Julie was just pipped at the post and had to be content with another 2nd place.
