A teenager has been left shaken after a man grabbed her and attempted to coax her into his car in Newport yesterday evening (Monday).
The incident is said to have taken place at around 18:30 as the 17-year-old was walking through Matalan car park towards St George’s Approach, whilst she was heading home.
A male – believed to be in his 40s – allegedly grabbed her by the hood and urged her to get into his car, claiming he wanted her to ‘stroke his dog’.
Fortunately, another woman nearby stepped in and asked if the young woman knew the man. When she said no, the concerned bystander told the man to leave, giving the victim the chance to flee the area and run home.
The man reportedly continued to follow her briefly, trying to get her to return to the car once she had left the car park.
He is described as white, around 5ft 7in tall with a grey beard. He was wearing a dark grey jumper and navy joggers.
It’s believed he may have been hiding in the bushes nearby prior to the approach.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has launched an investigation into the incident.
The force says enquiries are ongoing.
Surely there is CCTV footage that would show
the vehicle number plate etc
Full credit to the woman for stepping in and challenging it. Usually the bystander effect means people assume it is most likely a family matter and so don’t get involved. Even if you think it is a family thing…get involved. Act first, ask questions later.
