5 Isle of Wight medical centres have taken part in a national survey to see how local healthcare practices compare across the country, with the latest statistics revealing that only 57% of patients at Newport Health Centre are seen within 2 weeks.
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been far fewer face-to-face consultancies with doctors. Nationally, more than 1 in 3 GP practices are doing more appointments remotely (for example, via video link) than in person.
Waiting times have also increased, with only 2% of practices seeing all patients within 2 weeks.
The NHS appears to be in crisis. Nationally, official complaints about GPs have risen by 40% in just 1 year. A total of 120,024 complaints were made about GPs in 2021/22, compared with 86,114 the previous year.
The best performing medical centre of the 5 surveyed on the Island was East Cowes, with 96% of patients being able to see their doctor face-to-face and 94% within 2 weeks. The worst was Newport Health Centre, with just 57% of patients seen within 2 weeks.

I see The Esplanade Surgery didn’t take part! They would have been at bottom of the pile, especially their “new computer program for prescriptions which does not allow repeats”? Whoever thought this one up needs a holiday or a labotomy… Witness far to many times patients of a certain age whose scripts were either not with pharmacy or not received”when pharmacist says the program is “s.. t you know we are in trouble!.
Sadly Esplanade Surgery is now run terribly.
South Wight wouldn’t have been far behind.
The NHS appears to be in crisis
…
The NHS has always been claiming to be in a crisis – even back in the 1980’s they had headlines on the TV news, that stated “Crisis in the NHS”
No matter how much money this mess drains from society, it still claims to be in crisis – perhaps the answer is better management of money and resources.
instead of pandering to people wanting liposuction, gender reassignment and other non essential surgeries then they wouldn’t have such an issue would they
after all, they are supposed to be there to “only” fix the broken bones, heal the physically sick, provide preventative checkups, such as dental, assist in the birth of new life and assist in the care at end of life – nothing else.
Always plenty of money in the pot for diversity training.
There are around 21 million Finished Consultant Episodes (episode of treatment to discharge) every year in the NHS. 10 million of those are over 65 (47.6%)
Gender reassignment accounts for 900 since 2000. That’s 41 a year, or 0.0002%.
In fact, the things you deem “essential” comprise 99.982% of all FCEs.
The biggest load on the NHS, right now, are elderly people. People aren’t waiting in ambulances outside of A&E because someone is having their winkie removed. They are waiting in ambulances because there isn’t a care home place for a bed blocker.
That isn’t due to care home staff not being vaccinated. 90% were vaccinated by the deadline. By comparison the care profession has lost over 350,000 staff due to Brexit.
Stop trying to paper over the misuse of the NHS by health tourists, immigrants and those that want cosmetic surgeries.
even one gender reassignment is one too many – those staff could be better tasked with actual healthcare.
and stop trying to blame everything and everyone else for the failings of the NHS top management, capital allocators, policy decision makers and those that decided that 10% of staff were worth culling, because they wouldn’t be injected with an experimental concoction that really wasn’t needed.
Someone need to go back to school and learn some basic maths.
The only crack that is being papered over is the massive canyon-wide one caused by the mismanagement and underfunding of the NHS by the current Government shysters.
The fact is that the overall impact of the things you Daily Express types constantly bleat and squeal about are miniscule.
ha ha the NHS has consistently been given more money year in year out, yet it still has its begging bowl out for more, claiming underfunding.
stop making excuses squid for the pathetic mismanagement of funds by the demi gods that call theirselves departmental managers and top management in the NHS
Perhaps if they didn’t spend a single penny on diversity officers, then there would be more money for front line. That is the first in a long line of grade A stupidity demonstrated by NHS Policy makers.
they need to cut all the bloated admin, cut the woke diversity officers and get rid of more of the wasteful managers they have.
the waste in the NHS is a colossal mess, which needs sorting – by cutting and cutting hard.
Lets put another one of your lies to bed.
The IW NHS Trust has 3,200 employees. 2400 of those are clinical, 789 are admin and estates, most of whom are maintenance, porters, etc. Four of those are “diversity officers” costing the Trust a total of £105k a year out of a total wages bill of £110 million. That’s 0.09%. Explain how getting rid of those is going to make any substantial difference at all.
The answer is that it won’t. Do we need 4 diversity officers? Not really. Are the fact that we have them the major drain on resources you and your Torybot chums like to think? Not the tiniest little bit.
Wake up and stop being a sheep.
four diversity officers – typical woke drivel – £105k that could have been spent on fronline services
the wasteful NHS spends £40 million a year on 800 diversity officers – so please, spare me the dross about not going to save much by getting rid of them
typical lefty do gooder
The NHS total annual budget is around £136 billion. Now, I know you have trouble with numbers, but that is £136,000 million.
One Hundred and Thirty Six Thousand Million.
So the £40 million you claim is spent on diversity is a shade under 0.03% of that total.
The thing is, when the right wing press bandies about “facts” like £40 million blown on diversity in order to distract you from the real problems, you swallow it , hook line and sinker because you actually are too thick to do the basic maths which prove how insignificant it is.
Then you make a complete idiot of yourself by trying to push the same garbage at people who actually are capable of understanding big numbers.
timms – the percentage is irrelevant – it is the fact that £40 million is wasted on pointless woke diversity jobs, instead of frontline care – face facts instead of trying to justify such woke garbage
£109,000-how many more nurses would that make room for ?
r ?
Funny how someone can provide real facts and figures and get downvoted while other can post unsubstantiated gibberish and get upvoted.
Is this a sad reflection on the stupidity of IE’s readership or the general lack of intelligence on the Isle of Wight?
It’s both Smiffy
typical lefty do gooder – those that see through your narrative and don’t agree with you, are bad mouthed and insulted.
lefties are all the same – spout all their drivel about inclusivity, openess, fairness, transparency and everyone has the right to speak up, however, as soon as anyone actually does disagree with a lefty, they become, arrogant, insulting, rude, divisive and try to shut down, stamp out and kill off any opposing viewpoints, that don’t align with their own.
lefty hypocrites in their echo chambers cannot handle the real world.
Well, I think we’ve found our horrendous person for today.
Old people who have paid in all our lives! Regret wouldn’t be much in the pot if not for us oldies who paid in and took very little out
It doesn’t work like that, Janet, and never has.
All benefits and services paid for by the State are paid for out of the current tax revenue. That is the people who are currently working and paying tax pay for your state pension and healthcare.
Thats is, of course right and correct. However it doesn’t change the fact that our hospitals are backing up because there isn’t accommodation to release them to. “Bed blocker” is an unfortunate term, I agree. Can you think of a better one for someone who is using a hospital bed they do not strictly need.
My point was that the crisis in the NHS is down to a failure in community care and not gender reassignment surgery.
When I started paying national insurance in 1963 it was to pay into an insurance scheme to cover my needs when I got old. This was later changed to ‘current revenues pay current costs’. Nobody ever told me that would mean that now I am old the doctors receptionist can decide whether I can have contact with my doctor, or that social care has all but disappeared.
Of course the NHS needs money but they also desperately need ‘shoes and boots’ on the ground in the form of Nurses and Doctors.
Surprising how many people make up the 4% not seen face to face in East Cowes. Are they going to survey patients as well?
It just goes to show what a complete joke this survey is. It is practically impossible to get a face to face appointment at East Cowes health centre. Most of their staff are off sick for months at a time. 96% seen face to face is an outright lie. When you call for an appointment you are just told that they don’t have any appointments available. Even getting a phone appointment is like trying to squeeze blood from a stone.
No, they won’t ask patients as the truth hurts
Has anyone asked patients in East Cowes to verify these results?
Only one word needed ‘diabolical’!
Published Data from a 2022 GP patient survey ranked Cowes Medical Center 5,317 out of 6,418 centers in the UK that took part.
Tried to get appointment for granddaughter who had rash just like we have seen on t.v about strep A , she was continually crying and had already had antibiotics which haven’t worked. On t.v it says contact g.p straight away – we were offered a phone appointment in 2 days only if we could put pics on e -consult first ,which we couldn’t as it won’t let you because its a child and says contact G.P so just going round in circles! Tried 111 no answer after 30 mins, so a trip to A&E ,luckily all o.k , feel sorry for staff at A&E they’re doing jobs that other departments should be doing Inc G.Ps
Surgery in Newport/Carisbrooke got to to be amongst the worst in the country, if not the worst. Practice manager needs to be replaced. Couldn’t run a piss up in a brewery.
Might have something to do with populous, Newport have over 20,000 patients whereas Wootton have a lot less. It therefore makes absolute common sense that it would take longer to see a patient in Newport. Not a fair comparison of surgeries or an accurate way of reporting!
What news of Ventnor?
Tower House didn’t enter either, surprisingly. They took 43 days yo acknowledge my complaint that eould be responded to within 2q days lol…..still waiting, yawn!!!
