St George’s Way in Newport will re-open to traffic in both directions by 16th August, but work won’t be fully finished until resurfacing is completed on 27th August.
The council scheme, the latest phase of ongoing investment to ease congestion in and around the county town, is designed to help resolve bottlenecks at St George’s Way caused by traffic queuing on the approaches to Coppin’s Bridge and the Matalan roundabout.
It’s said that the necessary carriageway widening should be completed on either side of the Furlongs junction by the end of this week, following which the junction itself will be reconstructed. This work will mean the access in and out of Furrlongs will be suspended between Monday 2nd August and Sunday 14th August. Access and crossing facility of St George’s Way will be maintained for pedestrians at all times with traffic diverted via Staplers Road.
Once completed, the current traffic management will be removed over the weekend of 14th and 15th August when St George’s Way will revert to 2-way. The diversion route will be lifted and all taxi ranks will revert to their pre-work locations.
While St George’s Way will be re-opened in both directions, there will only be a single lane of traffic in either direction until the carriageway has been resurfaced and lined. This work will take place overnight between Wednesday 18th August and Friday 27th August after which it will be fully opened.
The only remaining work will be the laying of high friction safety surfacing. This treatment requires the road to be worn before it can be applied so this will be undertaken towards the end of the year.
Councillor Phil Jordan, Cabinet lead for transport and infrastructure, said:

First came to the Island in 1976 and even then Coppins Bridge was a problem area. Council stated that they would be looking at getting it sorted. 45 years later August is being muted as the date for St George’s Way being fully operational . Guess what – Pedestrian Crossings will still hold up traffic on both sides. Should have built a crossover that was suggested 45 years ago!

About time, There was a very noticeable lack of activity on this job, lets hope the local residential roads can return to normal usage instead of the ‘rat runs’ they have become (No the diversions did not work well)
well they had 3 people on it is that not enough….
What baffles me is why spend weeks digging a trench the full length then fill it in again to only dig another trench the same side 2 feet from the original to put kerb stones in, why not both jobs at the same time or is that too joined up thinking??
