UPDATED: A road traffic collision at Skew Bridge has closed the main road between Lake and Shanklin this morning (Monday).
1 vehicle – a Ford Fiesta – is understood to have collided into the bridge, resulting in the road becoming blocked in both directions.
Police and ambulance crews are in attendance. The incident occurred around 09:00.
The road has been closed and traffic is being diverted via Green Lane. All affected Southern Vectis buses with divert via Green Lane.
UPDATE @ 09:45 – Engineers from Island Roads are now inspecting the bridge for any damage caused to it’s structure. Thankfully, the bridge itself appears to be unaffected by the collision however a metal railing has been destroyed.
No one is thought to have been seriously injured in the incident and emergency services have now stood down.
The road remains under a hard road closure.
Meanwhile in Ryde… a Peugeot 307 has left the carriageway on Carters Road near Smallbrook. The 2 occupants of the vehicle have escaped any injury and recovery has been arranged.
UPDATE @ 10:44 – Sandown Road – the main road between Lake and Shanklin – has now reopened in both directions, however 2-way traffic lights have been erected.
Delays are to be expected in the area during peak times.
