A Newport shop is closed for business this morning (Saturday) following a break-in during the early hours, in which a glass sliding door was smashed to pieces.
Police were called to Central stores on Hunnyhill at around 01:30 following reports that the shop’s alarm was sounding and the property was being ransacked.
Works to rebrand the popular store from Spar to Central were only completed yesterday and now the building has been left damaged and the business unable to trade for the time being. As part of the rebrand, the shop’s tills are now in sight and the previously small and well-secured door has been replaced with a large, automatic one.
Island Echo understands a number of people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Investigations continue.
