Organisers of Shanklin Regatta have dashed hopes of a return of the annual event this year as it is announced the 2021 regatta has been cancelled.
The event, which has been running since the late 1850s, is popular with locals and tourists alike. Beach games, swimming competitions and all-round seaside fun is had by hundreds of people each year.
John Fleming, Chairman of the Regatta, has said:
“We tried to wait as long as we could and we didn’t want to cancel, but it was getting to the stage where there was too much to organise in such short space of time”.
It is hoped that the Regatta will return in 2022 after a 3-year break. Last year’s staging of the regatta was also cancelled due to the pandemic.
NOTE: Organisers of the Pier2Pier swim say that the event is not affected by the Shanklin Regatta cancellation and will still take place on Saturday 7th August.
