Shanklin has been named as the best beach to visit in the South East of England this Summer and the 4th best in the entire country, according to newly released research.
The study, compiled by SIXT – a car rental company – based its findings on several factors that ‘contribute to a perfect beach day’.
Explaining their methodology, SIXT said:
“We began our study by collecting each beach’s coordinates and bathing water quality data from the Environment Agency. Next, we ran these coordinates through the Google Places API to count the number of car parks and cafes within a 400 metre distance, equating to an average walking distance of 5-minutes.”
“Lastly, we manually researched whether there’s a seasonal on-duty lifeguard, and onsite toilets at each beach.”
Based on these criteria, Shanklin topped the list for the South East with SIXT eplaining their findings in further detail:
“Just a short ferry ride away from the ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, the beach is extremely popular with visitors looking to take their road trip a little bit further.
“Shanklin Beach offers a wide range of water sports for hire such as kayaking and jet-skiing, as well as other activities including amusement arcades and crazy golf within a short distance.
Article continues below this advertisement “The town itself is also fantastic for history fanatics with its buildings dating back hundreds of years. Expect to see plenty of thatched roofs as you stroll around town, with many parts feeling like a traditional English model village.”
The findings tally with the recent experience of Kimberley Wyatt from the Pussycat Dolls, as previously reported by Island Echo.
It makes you wonder why the West Wight is peddled so much by tourism bosses when Sandown and Shanklin often come out on top…
If only the old eyesore of the old Spa Hotel buildings were not derelict
and the old dump of an Hotel overlooking the sea, the old Esplanade Hotel.

Like many seaside towns, Shanklin, although quite beautiful in places has a large amount of residents living in abject poverty. Look beyond the beauty and you’ll find that it’s pretty much like any other town. Kids going hungry, working people struggling to make ends meet, unemployment rife, petty crime a regular occurrence, drugs available almost everywhere and all the other consequences of long term conservative cuts. It might be pretty, but that’s only on the surface.
