Retained firefighters at Shanklin Fire Station have been recognised by the Chief Fire Officer for their efforts at a road traffic collision near Arreton last year.
The letter of recognition highlights the professional and courageous actions of the Shanklin crew in very testing circumstances, whilst continuing to work diligently at the incident.
Firefighters worked in exceptionally difficult circumstances to resuscitate a 19-year-old girl that had been involved in a collision at Hale Common. Sadly, the casualty was pronounced dead at the scene despite the combined efforts of Shanklin’s firefighters and ambulance colleagues.
It’s said that the actions taken by the Shanklin crew significantly contributed to public safety and the overall objectives of the service.
The letter was presented to the firefighters by Deputy Chief Fire Officer Steve Apter QFSM. Rather poignantly, the presentation on Tuesday evening was one of DCFO Apter’s last official duties before retiring from the service – a career that began at Shanklin over 30 years ago.
To mark DCFO Apter’s retirement, the crew of Station 7 presented their colleague with a Mermaid Gin gift set – and plenty of good wishes for the future.
And well deserved to these guys dealing with what would have been a very distressing scene.
