UPDATED: Firefighters have tackled a blaze at a home in Ryde overnight which has destroyed the roof of a semi-detached property, leaving a family homeless just 3 weeks before Christmas.
Several crews from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Pound Mead at around 01:00 this morning (Sunday) following reports of a residential dwelling on fire, a fire which is believed to have broken out in an electrical box.
Firefighters successfully contained the blaze and stopped it from spreading to the adjoining property.
Although 4 residents have escaped injury and did not require any treatment from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, significant damage has been sustained to the family home leaving it inhabitable.
The ground floor, first floor and the roof have been extensively damaged.
The British Red Cross Emergency and Fire Support team have assisted the householders in finding emergency accommodation.
Fire crews have now left the scene.
UPDATE TUESDAY: Island Echo reader Kayley Page has set up a Go Fund Me donation site to allow Islanders to give however much they can to help the devastated family.
£265 has already been raised, but wouldn’t it be fantastic if the Island community could smash the £500 target? The family have lost so much just 3 weeks before Christmas.
