UPDATED: The main road between Yarmouth and Newport has been closed in both directions by Police this morning (Friday) due to a ruptured gas valve.
Island Echo understands a vehicle – belonging to contractors – has collided with an above-ground gas valve at a property between Port La-Salle and Victoria Road.
According to residents, the smell of gas is very strong in the area on the A3054 Bouldnor Road and the sound of the gas escaping from the high-pressured mains network is evident.
Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on standby at the scene and engineers from Southern Gas Networks are working to resolve the issue.
UPDATE @ 10:30 – The situation is said to now be under control, however the road remains closed in both directions
UPDATE @ 11:00 – The road has now reopened in both directions.
