The rollout of the annual flu jab and COVID-19 booster vaccination has been pushed forward a month on the Isle of Wight.
Vaccinations will now be available from Monday, September 11, after a new coronavirus variant has emerged and is becoming more prominent.
Health bodies are warning the variant is the most concerning since Omicron was first detected at the end of 2021. Where it is possible, both flu and COVID-19 booster jabs will be given at the same time.
The NHS had initially announced vaccinations would start later in October but as a precautionary measure to protect the most vulnerable from illness, it has made the jabs available sooner.
Earlier this week, Dr Michele Legg, Island GP and a clinical director on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board, said the Island is seeing an increase in COVID-19 cases and health bodies were expecting to see greater levels of COVID-19 this winter, than last year.
She advised those eligible to come forward for vaccination as it was the best way to prevent cases and stop the spread of infection.
Those eligible for the vaccinations remain unchanged – those in clinical risk groups and people aged over 65, as well as frontline health and social care workers.
The Island’s director of public health, Simon Bryant also said the flu vaccine was also important for two to three-year-olds as well.
Adult care home residents, housebound individuals and those most at risk will receive vaccines first, Mr Bryant said.
From 18th September, the national booking system will become available for people to book a COVID-19 vaccine online or they can be booked through the NHS App or by calling the COVID-19 number 119.
The aim, Mr Bryant said, is to get as many people vaccinated as possible by the end of March although the vaccination programme will run into the new year.
The UK Health Security Agency has said while the new variant is not yet classified as a concern, speeding up the winter vaccine programmes would deliver greater protection and reduce the potential impact on the NHS.

Just like the flu vaccination, the COVID vaccination has been developed by Pharmaceutical companies, not the Government. If we didn’t have modern medicine to treat 1000s of conditions, millions of people would die. Before any drug is allowed onto the market, it has to go through stringent testing and even then it has to be approved by WHO. You probably don’t know who this is, so I’ll tell you, World Health Organisation. The jab doesn’t stop people getting the virus but it lessens the severity of the symptoms. I know, I’ve had it many times and it is NOT just like a cold I can tell you.

This shows that the decline in mortality and infection rate in 2022 and beyond is a direct result of the large scale roll out of the vaccine. There is no evidence to suggest that the vaccine has be responsible for any “excess deaths”.

Taking the flu jab is a choice, 40,000 people a year still die from flu.
I think the problem with the covid vaccine is that people were told to have it, and people don’t like being told what to do. I had to have it as it was compulsory in my job, but i think if the government had offered it rather than pushed it, less people would be against it.
The vaccine has saved lives, yes, some people have died, but they are a very tiny minority of people. I’ve had 4 jabs, and I’m happy to take a 5th. As for your comment that its rushed and untested, scientists spent 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to create a vaccine, that has saved countless millions.

If no body had the vaccine then the nhs would be unable to deal with number of patients with Covid and there would be so many deaths that the funeral system would not be able to cope.
There should be a requirement to prove that any person seeking nhs treatment for the effects of covid has had up to date vaccinations.
Those that have refused to be vaccinated should not be given nhs treatment, if that would mean depriving people, who have urgent requirements not resulting from covid, being deprived of timely treatment.

That is exactly what my husbands work mate said back in 2019. 2020 he had a cough and a bit under the weather but said he was fine within 3 weeks still the same, his friend called a ambulance, he died a week later in hospital. He had Covid… if you want to beleave its a scandal that’s up to you. But me, my family and friends have had every Covid injection that’s been offered to us.
Were hospitals actually treating patients correctly during the pandemic.

Rubbish! I live here in Western Australia and thanks to our former State Premier, unlike those from the eastern states, our ratio speaks for itself: 1 death per 2149 persons or .046%. Comparing that to the UK of 1 death per 293 persons of population or 0.34%. Despite strict controls, business performed well and combined commonsense with vaccinations were and remain high. In my situation I have had 5 (freely available – any age) and remain untouched by Covid.

The vaccine has helped reduce the mortality rate from covid, look at the figures, some of my family and friends caught covid, I’ve been lucky, covid free over all the pandemic, but they were ill, John, my step dad, was seriously ill, and now suffers from long covid. If you have the chance to get the jab, get it, don’t die of ignorance.
