With the prospect of races commencing soon, the Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team have been keen to get back out on the road for some group rides.
Following on from the weekly ‘Chain Gang’ TT training, Joe Staunton organised a structured session on Sunday specifically aimed at road race preparation.
The 80km course featured multiple different types of terrain – flat, rolling, hills – and consisted of 1km of climbing. This required some thought with regards to wind direction and elevation profile as to how to best ride it.
The riders set off and split into small groups of 3/5, simulating a breakaway which often occurs in road races, with the goal of completing the course in the fastest time. The front group finished the 80km circuit in 2 hors – averaging an impressive 38.6kph in far from perfect conditions!
The team plan to run similar weekly training sessions to improve their racing skills in readiness for competing in their first race of the season in June.
