A man who was stopped by Police after running a red light on Newport High Street has been handed a driving ban.
Kieran Galvin, 22, of New Street in Newport, pleaded guilty to drink driving and use of a motor vehicle without correct 3rd party insurance.
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 18th December 2022, Galvin was seen by Police officers in his Vauxhall Astra driving through a red light on Newport High Street. Subsequently, he was pulled over on the lower part of the road.
A roadside breath test was conducted which showed the 22-year-old was over the drink-drive limit. He was arrested and taken down the road to Newport Police Station.
At the station, he blew a reading of 80 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit being 35. Vehicle checks also revealed that Galvin was driving without the correct insurance.
Defending himself, Galvin said that on the night in question he was struggling with his state of mind and that he made a stupid decision.
Magistrates handed the 22-year-old, who works in Niton, a 22-month driving ban. He was also ordered to pay a fine of £270, costs of £85 and a £108 surcharge fee.
Galvin who drove to court, despite living only just 10 minutes away, was forced to leave his car and walk home instead.

Well done
Such bad news reporting and so many lies in this it is actually terrible.
Maybe you could elaborate?
You’ve got what you deserve. Your only 22 years of age but when driving on public roads you must abide by the Rules of the Road, it’s the law you know! You silly boy.
It’s you’re not your.
It’s a wonder that there were any police about to see him do it. What were they doing there, picking up their burgers from McDonald’s?
Most of the time they ignore people jumping the lights. I was surprised the bothered to stop him.
This message is for Island Roads. Look at the awful state of the road in Newport High Street.
Don’t see the point in police bothering may as well have just let the arrogant little prick carry on for just a 22 month ban should have had it’s licence revoked for life never be allowed a licence or near a car again as long as he lives and the fine should have been £100,000 payable before it left the court or it don’t leave till fine is paid and as for the bullshit excuse it was struggling with its state of mind is just an insult too many scumbags committing crime and using that excuse it dosent excuse the behaviour these scum should be just shot save the taxpayers the expense a bullet is cheaper than a court hearing
