An uninsured driver who took his friend’s car and drunkenly drove it home was stopped by Police after he sped through a red light in Newport. 24-year-old Billy York, of Sandown Road in Sandown, pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday (19th March). Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 3rd March, Police officers on patrol in Newport noticed a Vauxhall Astra being driven well in excess of the speed limit before running a red light. Having stopped the vehicle on Coppins Close, officers approached York – the driver – who seemed distant when he was being spoken to. The 24-year-old told Police that he had a licence to drive the vehicle and that he was insured, but checks on their system showed that both of these statements were untrue. Having failed a roadside breath test, further tests were conducted at Newport Police Station which returned an evidential reading of 60. York was last before the courts back in 2021 for a possession of cannabis offence. Defending the unemployed 24-year-old, Michael McGoldrick told the court that York had been at a friend’s house having a couple of beers. After consuming the booze – and thinking that he was in a fit state to drive – York took his friend’s car and decided to drive home. Magistrates handed York a 17-month driving ban and ordered he pay a fine of £240. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £96 surcharge fee.

Would have cost him £2 to get on the bus back to Sandown. Then drove like a plonker and caught the eye of the police. Looks like he was at the back of the queue when they were handing out brains!
Shouldn’t the owner of the vehicle be in court charged with allowing the vehicle to be driven by a uninsured driver with no licence, as he was not charged with stealing the vehicle????
Another ridiculously lenient and pointless sentence by our useless magistrates, ensuring that we are all kept in danger as usual.
Speeding, driving through a red light, drink driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, and all while driving someone else’s car. This idiot should be put in a sack and thrown in the sea.
He is proof the island is a lawless place
What’s the point of a driving ban… he doesn’t even have a licence .. so just a fine when in truth he should be facing a prison sentence…. .. the courts have a lot to answer for …
We plan to bring in tagging and curfews for anyone caught drunk driving and/or driving illegally. The curfew would apply from 8 pm until 8 am and would last for 5 years if good behaviour is observed. To enforce these curfews, we will recruit thousands of street police who will work exclusively on the streets mainly in the evening and early hours to prevent curfew breaches, stop antisocial behaviour, and battle crime. We will arm all police for their own safety and to act as an effective deterrent. We promise the UK safer streets and less crime. Vote Reform.
Armed police??? Hell no. This is not America.
Remarkably, only 19 out of the 195 countries in the world have unarmed police. The other 18 have very low crime rates and they include countries such as Tonga, Fiji, Iceland, Samoa, and Vanuatu.
A vote for Reform is a vote for Big Brother!
Vote reform.definatly.
Yeah that will sort him out…. Banned him from driving when he’s not allowed to drive anyway cus he ain’t got a fecking license anyway! Jokers!
Billy dork you silly little fart
Until these selfish inconsiderate B’stards are banged up
our roads will remain unsafe.
Great Preston Road is a fine example of motorists failing to
Stop at Traffic lights
Why is this idiot not in prison.do the magistrates actually not think that as soon as he walks out the court he won’t get into a car a and drive. He probably drove to the court.
If I’d seen it, I would’ve tanked him with a Bowser missile and pumped a few red shells into him as I whizzed by.
