UPDATED: Emergency services are attending the scene of a serious road traffic collision at Rowborough Bridge near Brading this evening (Saturday).
A vehicle is understood to have crashed into the bridge close to the junction with Carpenter’s Road at shortly before 19:30.
The main road between Ryde and Sandown has been closed in both directions with traffic being diverted via Bembridge.
Southern Vectis’ Route 3 buses will divert via St Helens and Bembridge until further notice.
UPDATE @ 22:25 – A man in his 50s has been taken to St Mary’s Hospital after his red Ford Focus estate collided head-on into the bridge structure, causing significant damage to the vehicle.
The driver, who was travelling towards Ryde at the time of the incident, is understood to have sustained serious injuries and has been removed from the vehicle by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Island Roads have put hard road closures in place at the request of Police as officers await further injury updates from doctors.
Motorists should continue to divert via Bembridge or Ashey.
UPDATE @ 23:30 – The vehicle has been recovered from the scene by Stag Lane Motors and the road has reopened.
The driver is said to be in a stable condition.
Southern Vectis buses have resumed a normal route.
