An already large housing estate in Newport could be getting bigger as new plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council.
The plans have been put forward by Gallantgreen, which was involved in building the 1st part of the current estate, between Newport and Carisbrooke.
Over 20 years ago, plans were approved for more than 200 houses on the currently empty land between Mountbatten Drive and Sylvan Drive. Now, full planning consent is being sought for 20 properties, and outline permission is wanted for a further unspecified number of houses.
An initial range of 2 to 4-bedroom houses could be built off of St Augustines Road.
Also wanted is the principle of development and access for the rest of the site, with scale, layout, landscaping and appearance to be determined at a later date.
6 hectares of a 9-hectare site would be built on and 35% of the proposed houses could be allocated as ‘affordable’.
The land has been allocated for development in the draft Island Planning Strategy.
You can view the plans, 23/01410/FUL, on the Isle of Wight Council’s planning register. Comments can be submitted until 6th October.

Taking bets on this becoming 25 in that space by the time they finish building
Developers should be made to destroy as many homes as they make or we will never be home neutral!
”Over 20 years ago, plans were approved for more than 200 houses on the currently empty land” … there are those words again, ’empty land’ .. otherwise known as countryside!
“Over 20 years ago, plans were approved for more than 200 houses on the currently empty land” – under normal circumstances planning approval would have expired after 3 years. Or is this like the Captiva development in Godshill where a care home and 64 care cottages became a 100+ housing development 18 years after planning approval first given – but of course the amendments were too minor to make it onto the weekly planning application list in the island Echo!
Brown envelopes decide what is being built on goldfish bowl island.
Is this the same Council that boast of their “GREEN” credentials?
Look at those unfinished road endings. This will be another Westridge Farm situation, where Captiva got permission for a few first, and then came back for 100’s later. Watch that space!
