The next phase in a long-running Island-wide review of traffic regulations has been put to formal consultation this week.
After reviewing suggestions from local people, the Isle of Wight Council is publishing proposed minor changes to parking in Cowes, East Cowes, Northwood and Gurnard. This is the first of several districts to be reviewed and all areas of the Island will be reviewed in due course.
The changes proposed have been drawn up from suggestions made since 2019. Then at the end of 2020, plans were drawn up and agreed with the police, before consulting with town and parish councils and local elected members.
Now, the original designs have been amended to reflect the feedback given and a formal consultation is being launched before any decisions are taken.
Director of Neighbourhoods, Colin Rowland, said:
“These changes are intended to make the roads in this area safer and easier for everyone to use.
“Most of the changes proposed here are very minor, but I know that a small change can sometimes make a big difference to local people’s lives.
“I am grateful to the town and parish councils and ward councillors in the area who took the time to make suggestions and send us feedback on the initial proposals we worked out.

Signs with details of proposed changes will be displayed in every street affected, for example attached to lamp-posts.

Just when you thought the Council couldn’t steal anymore money from people…..
More wasted money on paint the double yellow lines, everybody from the Royal Mail downwards to simply drive up onto the pavement flick the hazards on”job done” not leaving any room for mobility scooters, pushchairs etc.Police drive past these vehicles but do nothing, never seen or hear of anybody prosecuted for this dangerous manoeuvre.
If you’re going to spend islanders money on these changes make sure that they are properly policed and maybe people will think twice and adhere to the rules.
Council enforce it (Island Roads) unless its obstruction, but you’ll find the Police usually dont have the correct FPN form on them for some reason and always prefer the council to deal with it. Royal Mail and other Postal services have an exemption on most lines except Zig Zags and Bus Stops. But they should not be causing an obstruction, ie; on the footway. Thats back to the Police. I did some months ago berate an Island roads supervisor who deemed it appropriate to park on pedestrian zig zags in Gunville while work was being done in the vicinity. He thought i was deranged from his look, but then, people can get killed on, near, crossings.
They need the money to pay for their staff claiming £8.49 for car washes!!!

Nowadays people just park anywhere on pavements, half on pavements, across people’s driveways disabled bays right on the end of a road junction, everyone wants to park outside of their homes but there is not enough space on the roads to accommodate the amount of car ownership with many household having 2/3 cars it is a problem that will only get worse as time goes on.
Contrast the pretty yellow lines with the appalling state of the road, kerb and pavement, in the picture!
