Islanders aged 65-69 are now being invited to receive their COVID-19 vaccination as it is confirmed all eligible Isle of Wight residents over the age of 70 have been offered a first vaccine dose.
The amazing achievement is the result of a massive amount of hard work and careful co-ordination by NHS teams across the county, backed up by an army of volunteers who have given vital support.
Vaccination sites at Westridge, Shanklin, Carisbrooke, Freshwater, Riverside (Newport) and St Mary’s Hospital (Newport) have vaccinated tens of thousands of locals with doses offered to all over-70s, all older adult care home residents and staff, all of those classed as clinically extremely vulnerable and all frontline health and social care staff. Vaccines have also been given to ferry workers and some emergency services.
Nationally, over 15 million people have been vaccinated in the first 4 cohorts of priority allowing the programme to move on.
Now, around 9,800 people aged 65-69 on the Isle of Wight will be offered the vaccine before the 60-64s – of which there is around 11,000 – are invited for their jab. It is hoped that all over 50s will have received their first dose by May, as previously reported by Island Echo.

Dr Nigel Watson, leading the vaccination roll-out across the county, said:
“From a standing start in December, this is an outstanding achievement. Thanks to the dedication and skill of those on the ground, and the positive response of the public, we have been able to do something really special.
“We have been determined to meet the target of vaccinating the first four priority groups by the middle of February, and so it is very satisfying to know that we reached the milestone. Most satisfying of all, we know that we are protecting people who are vulnerable, and saving lives.
“It really is great news that we are making such good progress, and so I hope people will be reassured that will get to them as soon as we can”.
If there is anyone aged over 70 who – for whatever reason – does not believe they have been invited for a jab, it is not too late. They should book a vaccination via the national programme – either at www.nhs.uk/covid-vaccination or by calling 119.

you’re about 4 days late with this news, get up to date.
Ofcourse hospitals are full of people dying of the side effects of the vaccine….NOT, but some people if their faces were pushed into the absolute proof of something by all the scientists of the world and the Archbishop of Canterbury, would STILL insist they know better, like the flat Earth society, what can ya do, nothing, because it’s not based on facts, but on the ability of human beings to believe almost anything against all and any sort of proof, But facts are how most regular people observe the world and make decisions.
and every death recorded after the vaccine has been given, will not be recorded as covid related, whereas every death beforehand has been attributed to covid somehow.
Stop spreading false information “isle of wighter”. The vaccine is safe, as safe as the flu jab. I have been having the flu and pneumonia jabs for years. Still here. Also have had the covid jab. Still here.
flu and pneumonia jabs have a long history of usage to understand long term effects – covid jabs do not
you have no idea, whether in a years time, you will suffer a debilitating side effect. The NHS themselves admit in the risks of covid jabs, that until millions have been vaccinated they will not know if any other types of side effects are seen.
Infection rate at the moment is 0.06 anything less then 1. We would be out of lockdown.FACT!. Average age of death with covid 80.FACT! Most people will have mild symptoms and a 99.7 % chance of recovery. FACT! HOW MANY MORE FACTS DO YOU NEED!? These facts are from office of national statistics.
trying to educate pork again Mr Justice.
You can’t reason with blinkered sheep unfo
Island echo why do you keep deleting everyone’s comments? Is it because you don’t want to put the truth out there or are you trying to silence people who have a right to free speech?
Free speech does not absolve you from the consequences of what you say. Even in the US telling lies and spreading false information is NOT covered by their constitution.
you need to be able to substantiate the basis of your assumption that something is a lie and “because they said so” isnt an answer
The more people get the jab the quicker the numbers will fall the quicker we can get back to the pub for a real pint. Not rocket science!
Ha ha ha naive! And yes you have had flu and pneumonia jabs, which are tried and tested jabs. This covid jab is experimental, and has never been used on humans up to last year. It’s been released on emergency licence, thus no come back on the makers or government if things turn back. So Fred, don’t count your chickens yet! And if lies and false information is to be stopped, then let’s start with the MSM and the BBC. They are the biggest bullshitters out there! Have a good day
Have you taken the jab? Let’s hope so. Only people like you will.
I saw video that is very disturbing, and confirmed all that I believe about this so call vaccine! I’m just glad I refused mind that’s all I will say. No point going into what was said, because I will be abused about spreading lies and fear! This message is to all the awake out there, not you people asleep, because like you type think, I’m just a conspiracy fool. Have a good day everyone.
The stupidity is through the roof. You don’t need to see a video you just need to have intelligence and common sense. The fact that the majority are waking up at last is a good thing.
