All Islanders over the age of 50 should receive at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by May, the Government has revealed.
If achieved, it will mean that the top 9 cohorts in the JCVI priority list will have some element of protection from the virus, paving the way for life returning to normal. This would include adults aged 16 to 65 years in an ‘at-risk’ group.
The news comes following confirmation that the R rate has fallen below 1 for the first time since July and that the May local elections will go ahead on 6th May. It has also been announced that the Oxford Astrazenca vaccine does protect against the Kent mutant strain of COVID-19.
Data revealed by Professor Chris Whitty earlier this week showed how the most hospitalisations and deaths occur in those over the age of 50, even more so in those aged 70+.
To date over 10 million people have received their first dose, with over 500,000 receiving their second dose.
It is hoped that lockdown will be lifted by 8th March and that the country will go under national restrictions, which will be eased gradually as we move towards the summer.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to outline his plans in just over 2 weeks’ time.
I heard on the national news last week, that over 50’s would be vaccinated by March!
I’m at Tower House and have Cystic Fibrosis. This puts me in the 70’s and overs and clinically extremely vulnerable people group. I’ve had NO contact, still waiting for first jab. Went to the surgery and was fobbed off at the door and told to wait for a phone call. Worried that they will miss me. It is common for them to mess up new prescriptions from the hospital. Relatives in the 70 over group have had their jabs a week ago. I hope I am wrong and get it next week.

12 million vaccines given, no deaths no hospitalisations. 40,000 people in 8 countries have been testing the vaccine since March and that is just one vaccine. Flu averages 10,000 deaths per year before the mass vaccination during 2020. So there is a need for a vaccine for Covid. The only imbecile is you, the anti-vaxxer for various reasons. Yes island thank you. I think now after a year if the majority of people don’t see where this is all going, then we are truly screwed! I’ve all but given up on spending my time researching all different sources to tell the truth,only to be abused etc. So time to look after the people that are awake,and leave the sheep sleeping.
