UPDATED: One person remains in hospital this morning (New Years Day) after they were seriously assaulted as they tried to stop a group from ransacking shops in Ventnor High Street.
A number of properties in the town have had frontages damaged overnight including the former HSBC bank and ‘Wendy’s’, whilst the local Premier shop has had stock stolen after a group of what is believed to be youths broke into the store.
Multiple Police units were called to the scene between 01:00-02:00 and officers are now looking at CCTV to piece together what happened and who is responsible.
UPDATE SATURDAY: Island Echo understands the assault victim sustained a fractured skull during yesterday’s incident and is likely to remain in hospital for several days.
Police are investigating the damage sustained to shops and the assault on the local man.
UPDATE MONDAY: Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that 3 youths aged 17, 18 and 20 have been arrested on suspicion of burglary and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. All 3 have been bailed to return to Newport Police Station on 17th February.
The 37-year-old assault victim has sustained a fractured skull and eye socket plus a broken nose.
