The petrol station at the Asda supermarket in Newport has done away with cash payments with all transactions now pay at the pump only.
As of the 13th of August (Saturday) the supermarket chain – owned by EG Group – went card only, removing the option for its customers to pay in the kiosk at its only Island store.
Making the decision in the midst of the fuel and energy crisis, the decision will force those who pay with cash and those whose credit or debit cards don’t allow for paying at the pump to have to find somewhere else to go for their fuel.

Cash is still legal tender. So therefore to NOT accept cash is surely illegal. Discrimination by the back door.
There is no obligation in law that retailers must accept cash.
There was actually a UK Gov petition set up in April to make it unlawful for for shops to refuse cash. It got 33,000 signatures and was rejected.
Totally agree, Morrisons petrol will be a tad busier now me reckons!
Boycott Asda.
Blatant profotiring with the fuel and food prices.
They must have been rubbing thier hands together in glee when Putin invaded Ukraine.
It gave them the excuse to increase prices and profit.
Oh no they are making a profit, how dare they try to run a business,
wow, you guys love to boycott the most stupid thing. all whilst with a card in your pocket that you refuse to use. 😀
cash is legal tender.boycott people
greedy gits just dont wsnt tol pay measly minimum wage too a kiosk staff! tight or what
Not only those that pay cash but people with disabilities or unable to get out of car easily for whatever reason cannot get help from attendant, also leaves high risk as no one will monitor if fuel is be put in appropriate can’s etc. Nice Asda is putting customer wellbeing and safety first!. Another job lost.
There is always a “call for aid” button for assistance and routine patrols for spillages and breakages.
Yes wonder how they will stand on Discrimination against disabled. Interesting point. As we approach recession hell be surprised if anyone will use a credit or debit card unless rich as they will budget daily with cash.
They haven’t been accepting cash for weeks. I will not be using them in future, will go to a station that does accept currency. Very stupid decision by ASDA that will cost them custom.
The vast majority of stores on the mainland who use this format have actually seen revenue increase. I had to write a case study on the Boston one at Uni.
THIS IS SPARTA !!!!!!
(iw branch)
Like all of our major supermarket chains, the only thing that matters to them is their profits.
Its called running a business. The whole point of running a business is to make a profit.
its discriminatiin fool.lots want too use cash as its legal!
No, the point of running a business is to treat your customers with respect, not utter contempt. Alienating a portion of your customers, even if they are a minority, is bad business. This will cost ASDA custom – it already has.
I agree with you, but you can go too far in the quest for profit. I assume you are also in favour of self-service checkouts, bank closures, and unmanned train stations, all of which increase profits for the businesses concerned, but impact on the level of service, especially for the elderly and disabled.
Isn’t that how a business works?
Go back to the mainland, you have out stayed your welcome !
Looks like to me, that this is the future and in about 10 years time all cash will be banned.
BIG BROTHER will know your every detail of every transaction that you will ever make.
So what? Unless you are buying something illegal why would this be a problem?
It’s a big problem if I want to buy anything off Bad Dragon
the problem will be more scammers using your credit/debit card info and please don’t think they haven’t got the ability to do it, I was horrified that they can actually alter the contact number they are phoning from so the knowledge is there but wish they would put it to a more productive usage.
So that means they can drop their fuel prices
They need to get the receipt system sorted as a lot of the time they are not available.
I agree with others profit before service I will move to another supplier.
Simple, vote with your wheels.
If people don’t want cash, give it to me, I will be happy to take it!
In this day and age I would have thought that any sort of payment would be welcome? But as we can all see, the banks really have started all this.
And for those of us in the 21st century that don’t carry cards around but reply on Apple Pay and Google Pay??
No way to fill up.
(£30 barely pays to drive from one pump to another these days)
Apple Pay is unlimited I just payed £160 on fuel
Luke is correct Apple pay IF you have the funds will pay any sum required.
Yes Apple Pay is unlimited in limit but is limited to the kiosk, which isn’t open anymore. So along with the £30 contactless is no longer a way to pay at the pump which sports the sticker.
So surly this saves them money so the fuel will be cheaper?
No, their profits will be higher. Hardwoods on Lushington Hill now down to £1.68 per litre for unleaded, cheaper than all the supermarkets.
My bank card doesn’t work on petrol pumps so I must pay at the kiosk.
Not to mention that all pay at pumps now hold £100 of your cash as pre authorisation, if you put close to £100 in petrol or diesel in your tank then great but not so great if your struggling with money and can only put a certain amount of fuel in your car. That’s why the kiosk should stay open. Definitely boycott asda petrol station.
Asda only holds a £1 then it’s refunded back too you ,never been £100
Yes it was £100 until they had so much bad publicity so Oap please get your facts right
Actually I worked there until last week so I know the facts ,thank you
Sainsbury’s now just take the amount you’ve spent.
Regardless of the ethics of card-only payments – this format has proved very successful for Asda on the mainland for at least the last decade. When Asda in Boston (Lincs) converted to card-only, revenue went up 18% and Brighton (North), revenue up 7%. Tesco has had more limited success, but also plan to roll out the format nationwide.
With card processing companies lowering fees, and cash-in-transit companies like G4S massively increasing theirs – the C2B ratio is well above 1 in this case.
Bad move, heard some pay at pump overcharge in some areas – accidentally but a PIA to get money back. One I won’t be visiting. Shame wonder if they will see drop in trade?
OMG was that on FaceAche it must be true!
Goes with the Self Service tills inside, here is one that will not bother.
My mate filled up there on Saturday and he noticed that when he swiped his card he was charged £1 before he even began to fill up! Fraud surely?
Its a standard pre-authorisation protocol. Happens on a large number of card transactions you are just not aware of it. The £1 is credited back after the transaction.
That £1 is refunded back to you ,fuel doesn’t get taken out of your bank straight away
No, he wasn’t charged £1. Instead £1 would have been reserved against his card, as a check to see that the card was valid.
They can go to hell then, I will go elsewhere
How about boycott Asda altogether, if they had their way it would be card only in store as well
It will be soon, give it a year.
DISGRACEFUL !
The island certainly IS the worlds centre for dinosaurs and fossils isn’t it!!!
If they had a small shop there it would have paid for itself all the others have them and how many times do people buy drinks and snacks when getting fuel ⛽️ I think lots of lost revenue.
I used to do my weekly shop (with cash) then fuel up on the way out so now I shop at morissons.
Doesn’t take Apple pay…I no longer carry cards or cash so it’s very inconvenient…cash is going out of fashion anyway.
