Staff and students at Nine Acres Primary School in Newport celebrated Isle of Wight Day in style on Saturday (22nd September).
For this year’s event the school decided to use a beach theme where children could come dressed in all things beachy.
Throughout the day the children learnt about the beaches around the Island with a focus on looking after the environment. Classes investigated the effects of plastic on marine wildlife and created beautiful ‘trash art’ with plastic they would usually throw away at home, to protest against the damage plastic causes.
Some children even wrote messages on pebbles they had collected and placed them around the local community for anyone to find.
To finish the day in style the whole school participated in a 350-strong flash mob, featuring giant inflatables and the classic Beach Boys tune ‘Surfin USA’. Naturally the lyrics were changed to surfin’ Isle of Wight!
Maisie Fry, Teacher at Nine Acres said:
“A fantastic day to be had by all to raise awareness of key issues and celebrate our amazing little island in style!”
