A 35-year-old man from Newport has pleaded guilty to drink driving for the 3rd time in just 8 years.
James Johnson, 35, of Landscape Lane in Newport, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared in front of the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (4th November).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that at 00:20 on 21st October Johnson was seen driving his red Kia erratically on Regent Street in Shanklin.
At the roadside, the 35-year-old conducted a breath test which indicated positive for alcohol. He was then taken to Newport Police Station where he gave a blood alcohol level reading of 61 – above the legal limit of 35.
This was Johnson’s 3rd offence for drink driving in the last 8 years, with convictions in 2015 and 2018. As a result, he will be handed a mandatory 3-year driving disqualification when Magistrates sentence him next month.
The case against James Johnson has been adjourned until 2nd December to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled. He has been given an interim 6-month driving ban in the meantime.
And in 3 years time he gets his licence back and does it again then what a 5 year driving ban ? Taking his licence away clearly hasn’t worked as a deterrent for him before. Shall we wait until he kills someone and then put him in prison?

The scum should be banned for life, he obviously never learned from his previous convictions and doesn’t care in any way for the safety of others.
3 times in the last 8 years, they are the one’s he has been caught on how many more times has he been out drunk and in charge of a deadly weapon? Driving licence and car should be removed and a hefty fine. Why wait until he kills someone. Is life that cheap?

He’s run out of chances. Ban him permanently. He’ll likely ignore it anyway. It’s just a matter of time until he kills someone, why wait until then? Courts should have an obligation to protect us all from road menaces like him. Call me cynical but I bet he’ll get a slap on the wrist. Can you imagine getting hit by his car? His insurers won’t pay up. Chances are he’s been drink driving for years and has only been caught 3 times. Public menace if ever there was one.
Should be min 3 years in prison before he kills someone.
