UPDATED: An alleyway linking Pyle Street to Scarrots Lane in Newport has been cordoned off by Police this afternoon (Thursday).
Chalmers Way has been closed to the public as Police investigate what is thought to be an assault. Evidence is being gathered.
Officers were called to the scene in the heart of the town earlier on today when what witnesses describe as a ‘fight’ broke out.
Scarrots Lane and all businesses remain open as normal.
UPDATE @ 15:51 – A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Sandown in connection with the incident, in which another man has sustained serious injuries.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that an attempted robbery took place on Chalmers Way shortly before 13:45 this afternoon.
The victim is being treated at St Mary’s Hospital.
Multiple Police units and the National Police Service Helicopter have been in Sandown in a bid to locate and detain the suspect, who is now in Police custody.
