UPDATED: A motorcyclist has been seriously injured following a collision with a car between Godshill and Whitwell this evening (Friday).
Emergency services were called to Whitwell Road at 16:40 following reports of a motorcyclist having collided with a white Ford Fiesta.
One appliance from Newport Fire Station was called to the scene due to oil and fuel on the carriageway, however has since returned to station.
The injured biker – a male in his 30s – has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital at slow speed and is expected to be airlifted to a mainland hospital. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed on the helipad at Newport having been alerted to the incident.
The motorcyclist’s injuries are not thought to be life-threatening at this stage.
The road has been closed in both directions whilst investigations take place.
UPDATE @ 19:30 – The road has now reopened in both directions.
Island Echo understands the male motorcyclist, believed to be a local 19-year-old, has remained at St Mary’s Hospital with injuries to his arm and is being checked for any spinal injuries.
UPDATE SATURDAY: The injured motorcyclist from Godshill has been transferred to Southampton General Hospital and is due to undergo surgery for injuries to his shoulder, shoulder blade and elbow.
