A 20-year-old who punched another man outside a halfway house in Ryde has pleaded guilty to assault at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court.
Harry Mortram, 20, of Clarendon Street in Newport, appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on 12th July, outside The Foyer on George Street in Ryde, Mortram got involved in an altercation with a man.
Mortram punched the man, with a closed right fist, in his eye socket. He then began responding with both his left and his right fist, one after another, making contact with the victim’s cheek.
The victim, who escaped any significant injuries, managed to enter The Foyer for safety.
Mortram was later arrested and admitted that it was him and he did it of his own accord.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick said that Mortram – who is unemployed – had received a message from the victim threatening him and another acquaintance regarding another issue that Mortram wasn’t involved in. He also added that the 20-year-old had become anxious about his involvement in the situation and had decided to act.
Mortram had a previous conviction for a non-dwelling burglary theft that he committed back in November 2021. He was given a community order on that occasion.
Dealing with this matter, Magistrates decided to revoke and resentence Mortram issuing him a new 12-month community order with 20 rehabilitation days attached. Unpaid work wasn’t added to this order due to Mortram’s inability to complete it. He was also fined £80 and ordered to pay costs of £85, compensation of £25 and a victim surcharge of £114.

So a slap on the wrist then
Criminals will never rethink their lives unless they are given sentences that impact them. Community orders are ok for non violent 1st time minor offences, but after that hit em hard. The recent case about Adam White shown on 24 Hours In Police Custody this week says it all.He chased 2 career criminals armed with crowbars and masks trying to burgle his house, his wife and children were in bed, In the process he knocks them off the stolen getaway motor bike after losing control of his car & injuring them, they were arrested. He was sent to jail for 2 years for what he did in the heat of the moment, he was honest and a suspended sentence would be fair. They got suspended sentences.Carried on a life of crime !!. Worth watching.
I expect the 1st community order was due for renewal then,I can see why half the police force can’t be bothered as judges are to soft these days
Judges are ONLY soft because our prisons are now filled with our own and the world’s vilest crammed into them.
So they can never again give meaningful sentences unless they are the very very worst crimes. The crims know this, so the deterrent value of jail is gone forever for trivial to medium crimes.
The UK needs to deport all those we have stupidly given a safe home to if they break any law, and everything they have reproduced with them, otherwise this country for working classes will be swamped with crime in every area within a couple of decades.
I expect Harry has learnt his lesson now. I don’t think we’ll be seeing him on IE again.
