YMCA Winchester House in Shanklin has opened its doors to the Age UK Men in Sheds project.
The Men in Sheds movement was started to tackle isolation in men over the age of 60. Meeting in local ‘sheds’ the men undertake DIY activities whist sharing and learning new skills. The project is part of the Age Friendly Island partnership, which aims to make the Isle of Wight a truly great place to grow old.
Utilising a disused workshop at YMCA Winchester House, the project set up its 6th location on the Island and has already begun to undertake projects around the facility. The men have been fundraising to refurbish the floor in the workshop, and are looking to replace the ceiling in the new year.
YMCA Isle of Wight Manager, Simon Davies said:
“We are delighted to welcome the Men in Sheds Project to YMCA Winchester House. The project is a fantastic way of helping older men be positively involved in the local community. The men have already been busy building fences and creating allotments, and we’re looking forward to seeing what activities the group undertakes in the future.”
Men in sheds welcomes new members every Monday, 14:00-16:00. If you are interested in joining, contact Age UK on 01983 525282.
