A man who launched an attack on a woman on the street in Ryde Town Centre last week has pleaded guilty to an assault charge and has been remanded in custody.
Michael Bishop, 41, currently of HMP Winchester but normally of St Michaels Avenue in Ryde, pleaded guilty to assault by beating when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on Friday (18th November), at 15:00 in the afternoon, a woman leaving a shop on John Street in Ryde was approached by Bishop, with him asking to talk to her.
The woman – wearing a nurse’s uniform – agreed to have a chat with him and the pair did so. After this, however, Bishop began punching her in the head and shoulder.
After continued blows, the woman landed between a car and the pavement at which point Bishop shouted ‘stay away from my father’.
The offence was committed whilst Bishop was on bail for another offence. It was also in a breach of his bail conditions – to stay away from John Street in Ryde. As a result, he was charged and remanded in custody.
Ms Smout added that Bishop had an ‘unenviable record of offending on bail’ and that he often doesn’t stick to or adhere to any bail conditions imposed on him.
Defending Bishop, Barry Keel said that his client was in the area as he was speaking to someone about some scaffolding work he wanted doing. He also added that Bishop had consumed about 5 cans of cider on the day and that, mixed with the medication he takes for a series of mental and physical health issues, left him very confused.
The case was adjourned until 5th January to allow for sentencing to tie in with several other criminal matters that Bishop has been charged with.

‘Confused’ seems to be an understatement!
What an unpleasant individual. Exactly the sort of offender who belongs behind bars.
He lived door to me with his parents, he scares me and would shout things at me when I was in my garden, he also terrorised the young lady on the other side of his house, going in her garden and threatened her teenage son.
Needs some real men to discuss his antics with. As we will fund this rubbish anyway for life he just as well be funded in a wheelchair
Keep this nutter locked up behind bars for as long as possible. He’s a menace and a danger to us, the public. Poor woman, hope she’s ok.
What a low life thug hitting a woman has this piece of dog shit got no morals, if I had witnessed this he wouldn’t be going into custody, he would be eating hospital food through a straw for a long time (
