Police have confirmed the death of a 25-year-old man who was found in a river in Alverstone yesterday afternoon (Thursday). Members of the public spotted the male in the water alongside the Alverstone to Newchurch cycle path – the Red Squirrel Trial – at just before 14:00. Island Echo understands that those initially on scene pulled the man from the water and began CPR. It’s said he was walking a dog at the time of the incident. Emergency services – including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance – rushed to the scene, but sadly there was nothing that could be done to save the man’s life. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police remained in attendance throughout yesterday afternoon and into the evening, with cordons only being lifted late last night. The man’s family have been informed about his unexpected death and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
