A rare and intense solar storm led to a magical display of the Northern Lights right here on the Isle of Wight overnight – and Island Echo readers captured the intense colours on camera. It’s unusual to see the Aurora Borealis so far South, but the clear skies tallied with a significant geomagnetic storm. It’s the first time in nearly 20 years that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in America has issued a severe solar storm warning. Yesterday, experts thought that the glowing Northern Lights might be seen in the South, but expectations seem to have been exceeded with such strong pinks and greens seen right across the Isle of Wight.
