Following his commitment to oppose ‘unnecessary greenfield development’, Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has objected to plans for new housing on greenfield land in Brighstone.
The latest plans for Brighstone would see the construction of 5 new dwellings on land rear of Hollis Drive with access to the new development created by the demolition of a garage in Hollis Drive.
Mr Seely has said the development would have a detrimental impact on existing residents in the area, destroying their quality of life. He’s said:
“I cannot see any benefit to the local community from this development, in fact I can only see the opposite. This application may only appear to be five houses but when viewed alongside other housing developments in the village, the numbers start to add up.
“We need to protect our unique villages and stop this piecemeal concreting over of the countryside.”
Bob says that the design of the houses is at odds with existing architecture in the village and expresses concerns that the plans have little regard for the AONB the land sits within.
Mr Seely has said he has seen no evidence that there is any identified need for additional housing in the area stating that the houses proposed are not for Islanders.
“These proposals are for three- and four-bedroom houses which the Island has in abundance. What we have a lack of on the Island are one- and two-bedroom homes to accommodate Islanders young and old.

Comments on the application [21/00093/FUL] can be made until 26th February.
Good for him. It isn’t a case of being a Nimby, it is a ridiculous development proposal.
Developers are allowed to totally ruin existing residents lives by building unsuitable housing next door to them and have no consideration of the disruption caused to often elderly residents during construction.
The unnecessary development of 20 or more houses along Colwell Road has caused traffic disruption, vans parking outside houses and on pavements, noise, litter etc for over two years and it is still ongoing.
It is about time politicians, the council and residents had a real voice in these unwanted developments
How hard is it for the council to simply put out a statement that reads
No more housebuilding will take place on the island on any greenfield sites, ever.
No housebuilding will take place on former commercial sites – these are to be returned to greenfield status.
No one will be permitted to purchase a house on the island, that is not being lived in all year round by the purchaser.
No one on state benefits will be permitted to move to the island at the expense of the taxpayer.
The island is unique, in that it is small, already has overcrowded roads and services. The islands biosphere status and all AONB are under threat. No more houses.

equaliser – this isn’t about your political views – this is about common sense and reality. The island has a finite amount of space and does not have the capacity for more people – you cannot extend out into the sea.
no one who cannot afford to move out of their own pocket should be able to squander taxpayers cash moving here, under any circumstances.
the island is a garden isle and we need the greenery to increase oxygen production and remove CO2 from the atmosphere – you know, so we can all continue to breathe and live.

Totally agree with you. Been saying the same for years and been accused of all sorts just for stating facts. When there is a finite amount of space, how on earth can you just go on building more and more houses and moving more and more people in, without forever changing, destroying, the character of the place?

There should be no further housing of any kind built on the Island until Health Care facilities are made commensurate with the present population. (And a few other things)

So 5 houses would disrupt the lives of the residents in Brightstone, but 900 plus won’t in the Ryde area?? that takes some figuring out. Sounds a little bit of “not on my doorstep” Overall no building should be taking place on green fields, no matter the area.
Brighstone. This is in the West Wight where Mr Bob Deeply lives! It is such a shame he didn’t voice his opinion and object to the ‘concreting over’ of land when the P Feathers development was be planned. 904 houses are going to be built in Ryde and a further 400 over the road in Bullen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The island is already like a big suburb. Very fast catching up with the mainland in a lot of negative ways unfortunately.
