A large section of cliff at Small Hope Beach in Shanklin has fallen today (Sunday), narrowly missing a recently refurbished cafe.
Beach huts have been shunted out the way and are now blocking the Shanklin to Sandown revetment after several tonnes of cliff fell behind them. It is thought the fall occurred around 11:30 this morning.
One Island Echo reader has said:
“Just missed it by a few seconds. Heard a very strange noise, realised what was happening and managed to run out of the way. Quite scary!”
The beach huts are only just passable on foot, however the beach is an alternative route.
Not far away, a deep void has appeared at the edge of the carriageway on Hope Road. Temporary traffic lights are now in place whilst this is investigated.
With further heavy rain expected overnight, Islanders are reminded to take extra care whilst on or near the Island’s coastline.
