The Newport duo of Ollie Coulson and Toby Batchelor won the Junior Pair event at the Southsea Regatta on Saturday, overcoming choppy conditions and extra competition from Kent and Sussex crews.
They had a great start but were unfortunate in having a late recall after 2 other boats had crossed blades on the line. The Newport pair were a good distance up the course before being flagged to return. However, they kept their composure and made another confident start taking the lead in the first 100 metres.
After the halfway turn they extended that lead, crossing the line with three lengths in hand.
They will take on BTC and Woolston events next weekend in their quest for the Hants & Dorset Championship.
