Following on from a successful start to the e-Racing season, Wightlink-Wight Mountain Cycle Race Team riders Jerry and Julie Cooper competed in the British Cycling Criterium Series on the Zwift virtual cycling platform last Wednesday.

This was their first race of the season with Jerry riding in the Men’s (C) category and Julie in the Women’s (D) category race. The 10-mile challenges were held over 8 laps of the tough ‘Crit City’ rolling course, which featured a short, sharp climb each lap.

In a field of 31 riders, Julie went out hard from the start to ensure that she was well-positioned at the front. After putting in several strong attacks on the climb, she pulled away with a small group of riders. But with 2 laps to go the eventual winner put in an attack and, despite their best efforts, the bunch were unable to catch her. Julie pushed on after the final climb and managed to secure a creditable 2nd place after winning a superb sprint to the line.

There was a strong field of 65 riders in Jerry’s Men’s race. The pace was high from the start, averaging over 25mph, and Cooper managed to hang in with the bunch to finish in 20th place.

Both riders are looking forward to competing in the next round this week and hope to improve on last week’s performance.
