A video posted by Youtuber ‘Turdtowns’ has listed the 6 worst places to live on the Island – and it has racked up more than 60,000 views in just 2 days.
The Island only has 9 places which qualify as towns but a Youtube video has ranked 5 of them – plus 1 village – based largely on crime rates, as well as house prices and availability. Other factors include the presence of dilapidated, derelict or vacant buildings as well as the friendliness of residents.
Whilst there are good things mentioned about most of the towns, some of the more memorable lines sadly focus on the negative. The narrator describes Newport as ‘dreary’, Sandown as ‘bleak’, the outskirts of Ryde as having terraced houses ‘covered in dirt, dust and seagull faeces’ and labels Ventnor’s High Street as ‘pointless’.
You can watch the video below to find out which is the Island’s biggest ‘Turdtown’:

True, all those towns look the same: just sea of concrete with little life other than cars honking around – certainly not nice places to live or visit unless you have to (luckily Internet and delivery can save you a lot of trips to those ugly environments!)
Heh, Newport quite spot on, it’s basically a massive junction with McDonald in the middle.
All in good humour, however I would have probably put Ryde in 2nd behind Sandown if i was rating turdtowns
only 5 i think they need to have anther look
No.1 Dump is Sandown fare too many derelict hotels
No.2 Dump is the Old Spa Hotel car park buildings
No.3 Dump the Old shop / Gym opposite Ryde St John’s Road Railway station
No.4 Dump County Hall
Just off for a dump, otherwise I could keep naming Dumps on the Island.
Ha ha ha. How funny.
Um!! If you don’t like it, actually love it don’t bloody come here then??
I think it was quite positive and eye-opening,if this is an outsiders perspective, then what do tourists paying hundereds of pounds think? Maybe this is the spark we need to hold our councillors to account, and actually do something about the states of our towns instead of silly vanity projects and fairy lights.
Absolutely. At least Ryde seafront is a good start. More of that sort of project. East Cowes take note!
A horridly accurate video. I love living here but can’t help agree many areas have been neglected and letting the place down. Will the council watch this and hang their heads in shame, or try and change this?! Of course they won’t..
Absolutely spot on. Wouldn’t have said that 30 yes ago. We were thriving. Shame on the Council.
less people living on the island with the same infrastructure, however, more doctors, more dentists, more space at the hospital and more outpatient facilities. The island didn’t suffer taxpayer funded moves of benefit spongers turning up and we didn’t have to put up with dinghy people being dumped here either.
the island was for the islanders and it opened its doors fully for all the tourists each year, with as much on offer as possible
now, it is just an endless procession of s cumbags moving here to fill the benefit hutches built on beautiful greenfilelds, to line the councils pockets. The island is overcrowded, with infrastructure unable to cope and yet the council are determined to pile misery on misery
You know that 90% of the new builds are for 2nd homers and well-off incoming retirees, right?
Yes, but there’s always a clause put in to have so many ‘social housing’ homes amongst them. Ironic it’s called social housing when most of those people are antisocial!! Visit East Cowes’ newest estate….
I agree. The focus was more on Tourism, which meant keeping Our Towns and beautiful coast, attractive and honestly, more entertainment. A bit unrelated, but think back how many Nightclubs there were to go dance. I still like to dance, but only floor I can find is in Coburgs. I chatted with a coach full of OAP’s, not so many years back, staying in Sandown. The general fedback was that they were bored. Old but not dead. Its actually heartbreaking. We have a naturally beautiful Gem of an Island.
Send this to the Council
I don’t imagine they have to live in the turdy bit’s!
Thius just shows how much our so called loving caring council look after this island. All these rundown place should be made to at least look better with a bit of paint by the owners who ever the owners are, be it private, council, companies.
This council dpend millions on not so floating bridge, take as much council take extortionate parking but CAN NOT clean up the island. Were does the money go that we are robbed from????????
The Government slashed the money it gives to local councils ( voted for by Bob Seely ), telling councils to make up the difference while, at the same time, limiting the amount they can raise council tax. This means that, in real terms, despite most of them raising extra cash from increased charges, etc, local councils have, in real terms, 15% less money than they had in 2010.
That is why services are being cut. The IW council is no more or less incompetent than it always has been, and no worse than most other local councils (they are all, basically, run by amateur politicians).
And there is still no sign of Seely and Bozo’s promised “Island Deal”.
And WHY did Central Government NEED to slash funding to local councils?
Because we have had a never ending stream of dirt poor arriving with nothing into the UK, who ALL are housed, kept warm, fed, clothed, treated and educated by OUR TAXES.
So something had to ‘give’ to pay for these often troublesome arrivals.
See WHY we have to build more homes, as NONE arrive with the land, or a home, and few come with the capital to PAY for their own, so almost every arrival is to OUR detriment
MP’s cant say it, but only fools deny it, so over to you Smiffy
They have been slashing it since 2010.
Since then we also had Brexit which made UK a far less interesting place for Europeans who were a net positive for our economy as mentioned in gov’s own report.
We are now left with a lot of illegal immigration from outside Europe that’s not going away despite all the claims that after Brexit we will finally “take control of our borders” – but at least we can wait in passport queue in Dover for longer and soon give our fingerprints to EU, eh?
In fact we had record illegal migration recently, much success.
If your point is that government is incompetent, can’t curb illegal immigration that’s net-negative but at the same time destroyed net-positive legal migration… you’re correct.
If they’re amateur politicians why do we pay them so much? This is one reason why we pay so much Council Tax.
Can’t disagree with most of his points! Sad really…
Good video. If you get past the title you’ll see the presenter does say that these towns are no where near as bad as ones on the mainland. Hits the nail on the head. Also says that they look to be set for a revival. Buy a house now because in a years time prices are going to rocket away. Give it ten years and the island will be like Poole where a 1 bed flat is a million pounds.
unlikely. don’t spose you have multiple prices here already? Lol
Vote conservative this is what you get
We have so many deserted and run down buildings yet all we hear from developers is that we must destroy our beautiful countryside to build badly needed housing. This is so wrong, if our council/planning dept were in the slightest bit competent they would ban all new mass developments until these eyesores are redeveloped
I watched the video, IW Council should be disgusted with the way the Island looks.
The Tourist Information for UK should downgrade the Island to a Disaster Zone.
Alan Titchmarsh did not show these eyesores on Television recently.
Come on IW Council STOP talking about building more properties, tidy up the dumps on the
Island!.
It’s about time IW Council employed persons with brains,
not the useless employees they currently employ who do
nothing to help the Island.
The Island is becoming a Cesspit.
Pretty generous review of Wroxall. The set of the “The Hills Have Eyes” is spot on!
It’s easy to sit back and point fingers at areas that are struggling. Yes there are some eyesores and development is needed, some of the areas aren’t as lovely as they could be, but this is no different to the mainland. Places like Sandown are an easy target but anyone who is awake can see the constant fuss being made about the ocean hotel and other places. Yes these need sorting and i agree that pressure should be put on the Council, owners etc but again this just seems to be bashing places for fun. People live and work here despite everyone seeming to think it is ok to point the finger and say ‘where you live is rubbish’. Easy targets and damaging to the isle and peoples lives/wellbeing.
Sadly quite accurate. I really hope the Council see this.
Not one of these towns belongs in this charmless and unintelligent video.
This is our heaven many a beautiful face has the occasional mole I could find a hundred positive points on our beautiful island negativity is easy positivity is a journey you will only find through love of and the journey to seek if you’ve got a problem boats leave every hour and don’t come back x
The Island is now sadly full of street drinkers, drug dealers and ferral scum. Everywhere stinks of cannabis, we have hardly any essential facilities, such as public toilets and everywhere is filthy. Many places have become ‘No Go Areas’ and so many people find it quite threatening. Something has to be done and those who want all the glory in high places need to get off their backsides, open their eyes and start taking some action. I have lived here for fifty years and used to be proud to say where I live. Sadly, not any more.
Those in high places will NEVER ever be adversely affected by the scum or newcomers into the UK as they all have private health, dental care, private education travel in comfort in new electric cars and live in leafy lanes away from the dross they ‘happily’ inflict to ruin those who pay their council tax to give them and their loved ones a ‘wonderful life’
So why should they care
Haha!! No go area’s?? On thr Island?? Really?? Have you been to London? You have a problem with your mental health, NOT the Island. Negative old person comment. Get out more.
The council have put so many restrictions on older buildings, especially conservation areas, that you have to jump through so many hoops to do anything to improve your property, to the point where its not worth investing in it.
The hotels in Sandown need to be demolished. Why don’t the council compulsory purchase them and then use the land to attract investment to rebuild the sea front and high street?
One thing it did raise was the amount of empty/derelict housing. Instead of granting planning permission on green fields why don’t the council give grants for doing them up and put a covenant on that they can’t be used as holiday let’s or rentals.
Personally l would take something some young kid u-tuber say does in his back bedroom with a pinch of salt, don’t get upset take it to heart, l think he has slated classified every UK seaside resort on the south coast as a turdtown..
Whole of the UK suffers with boarded up empty shops, what do you expect if you are locked down most of the country who spent two years at home sitting on their backsides watching Netflix whilst watching 1 million UK jobs & businesses outside get burned to ground by the incompetents at rotten to the core Westminster Herbert’s were partying snogging colleagues behind the wife back, not obeying rules they set, awarding PPE contracts to family, whilst banning you from doing anything with draconian rules.
Blody brilliant video. This guy was totally bemused at how a naturally beautiful place like Sandown has been allowed to get into this unholy mess.
The Council are missing the boat, the Island could be the wealthiest place in the UK as it has the most sunshine hours a small population and stunning countryside along with the breathtaking Military road The Island needs regeneration. The Council needs to stop letting shops to desperate people selling tack and kiss me quick hats only to be closed after 6 months and left empty yet again, get some people with know how and business plans. There are too many Charity shops also very scruffy, its like nobody has any idea at all!! Maybe it’s time to get outside help.
