The Island’s MP Bob Seely has welcomed plans to allow pharmacists on the Island to issue prescriptions for common ailments.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Bob asked for reassurance that the financial package offered will “support [pharmacies] and make them feel valued considering what extraordinarily good value for money they are?”.
Speaking afterwards, Bob said:
“Pharmacies are an incredibly valuable part of our communities across the Island. I am delighted that they are now being recognised as being a critical element in our community healthcare. Pharmacies are the first line in community healthcare. The more that we can enable pharmacists to do, the more we can help them stay at the heart of communities.”
The entire plan sets out how the Government intends to allow millions of patient’s faster access to care from their local pharmacies and GP surgeries. This includes a Pharmacy First scheme, through which the government will invest £645million over the next 2 years to enable pharmacists to provide treatment for a range of common conditions.
Pharmacists will also now be able to supply prescription-only medicine for ear pain, severe sore throats, skin and urinary infections.
Bob said:
“The Primary Care Recovery Plan is going to free up 15 million GP appointments over the next 2years. This is going to improve the NHS’ capacity to support those who need appointments most.”

With receptionists going to decide what health care you will be allowed and chemists issuing prescription drugs there soon will be no need for doctors, the NHS is broken.
And it’s people like Bob Seely and Boris Johnson who broke it.
The NHS broke itself .
£645 million over 2 years for the UKs 11,000 Pharmacies means a payment of around £29,320 per year for a massive increase in workload and responsibility. What happens after 2 years ?
This is another example of the Government wanting professional services on the cheap. It is an insult to Pharmacists.
Pharmacies are closing rapidly because of underfunding for their core services already, this needs addressing before passing more work on to them.
The issue is that significant funding is needed to train and retain healthcare professionals across the board.
Where are we going to get the pharmacies from? The existing pharmacies are now over worked as more are closing and going online only (Lloyds Pharmacy for example).
I have just read that the National Pharmacy Association predict we will lose 1 in 4 Pharmacies within 2 years if funding is not greatly increased
The Government need to address this before adding to their workload.
Newport will only have 3 Pharmacies when Sainsbury’s close their instore Lloyds.
There used to be five.
Bonker Bob strikes again, can’t wait for the mistakes being made by giving someone the wrong prescription for what they need. Get the damn doctors to work normally again like the rest of us. Ridiculous idea and dangerous, buy hey what does Bonkers Bob care he will get private health care anyway.
There is no evidence that prescribing by pharmacists in the areas where they are licensed is any less accurate than doctor prescribing.
Is Barbeque Bob back on the scene!
The Barbeque season will be with us soon, that’s when Bobby
does what he does best.
Lol
Pharmacists prescribing pharma. Get ready for the surge in antibiotics.
Trouble is that pharmacists aren’t paid to hold consultations in England (like they are in Scotland). A busy pharmacist isn’t likely to hold free consultations for which they receive no payment from the Government when they have a queue at the counter.
Seely can squeak about “reassurance” as much as he likes. He knows this is just more Government smoke and mirrors to cover cuts, cuts and more cuts. There will be no money for pharmacies to provide this service and he knows it.
They certainly are value for money! Far cheaper than those bloody cheeky striking doctors.
In fact we are looking at how we might be able to get rid of doctors altogether and just employ nurses and pharmacists for the proles. That way we could get all the best doctors to work for private healthcare companies so me and my friends will always be able to get to see qualified people whenever we want.
What a load of rubbish shouldn’t be happening that is a doctors job. What if something is overlooked ends up being serious. We might aswell stop doctors all together .
Same with the vaccine rollout
They had any Tom, Dick or Harry administering the jabs.
Soon butchers will be doing surgeons jobs.
Walk in clinics throughout Europe open 24/7 are staffed by Consultants who have full diagnostics and labs to hand. I had a breast cyst removed 24hrs after discovering it in a middle of nowhere town in Italy..no waiting involved and it cost me 75euros. Pharmacies all over Europe have prescribed antibiotics, checked BPs pules/temperatures etc forever…There is always one open 24hrs in every town. Pharmacists actually study pharmaceuticals and have way more knowledge of drugs and drug interactions than most Doctors. I’m good with this and hope to see this introduced asap.
