Provisional results for the 2021/22 school year, released last month, have revealed that the Isle of Wight has the worst Key Stage 2 results of any local authority in England.
Key Stage 2 is Years 3 to 6 for children aged 8 to 11 – the final years of primary school. The percentage of primary school children meeting the expected standards at Key Stage 2 on the Isle of Wight in reading, writing and maths combined is 47% – 11 percentage points below the national average of 58%.
The next lowest local authority is Portsmouth, where 48% of school students meet the expected standards. In other nearby local authorities, 51% of Southampton students meet the Key Stage 2 targets as do 59% in Hampshire. The figure for the South East as a whole is 58%. The highest attaining area is London where 65% of pupils hit the target.
The number of Key Stage 2 primary school students meeting expectations has fallen since the 2018/19 school year – presumably due to the impact of COVID-19 on school attendance. In 2018/19, 66% of students in the South East achieved the expected standards – 8% more than in 2021/22.
Nationally, girls outperformed boys with 63% making the grade compared with 54% of boys. Boys only had better results than girls in Maths.
One reason the Isle of Wight primary schools have performed worse than those of any other local authority may be the lack of diversity on the Island. 74% of children of Indian ethnicity meet the expected standards as do 70% of Chinese – over 20% higher than the corresponding Isle of Wight age group.
The news of the poor performance of Isle of Wight primary schools comes after the Isle of Wight reported the worst results of any local authority in England in the GCSE and A level examinations this year, as revealed by Island Echo.

I thought so, seeing many older Caulkheads behaviour.
See where the children get it from.
My child left primary school here with the report stating she can form the letter G and R in shaving foam.
Her EHCP states she is just going into primary school but she has just left.
I have been asking for a total review of her education and health needs for 2 years.
Now I realize I have to REQUIRE it.
I have finally got a government education physiologist meeting at her new school but am told it is to “see how she is settling in”
I wonder if the meeting is really to misdirect me more and assess how easy it would be to continue to not provide my child with any form of education whilst telling me she is progressing when obviously she is not.
This beggars belief
Likely reason is because we have fortunately few of the type of immigrant who have large amounts of offspring Let’s hope it stays that way
So, according to you, our schools poor performance is due to having too few immigrant children?
And you see that as a good thing?
No wonder this country is going to the dogs.
Wake up England doesn’t know what attainment means and due to his own poor education didn’t read the article , therefore he thinks it’s a good thing.
That’s absolutely rubbish, kids deserve the same teaching standards as anywhere in the uk. What’s with all the excuses? Give the kids their start to life in the big world, stop blaming everyone else??? Just bloody teach the kids.
Talking about diversity, I wonder how low the percentage would get after taking out the high achieving children from Poland and other European countries (who tend to speak multiple languages).
Grim.
Does not surprise me, seeing the parents.
Most of the poor children sadly have mucked up parents.
1 minute their mothers & fathers are in a different relationship etc
No stability for the poor children.
This is rubbish.
When schools in inner city sink estates with massive drug, gang and crime problems have better school results than us then the problem clearly has nothing to do with the children or their parents.
From what I have seen on the Island John.
So many persons have different children with different partners.
I would not be surprised in years time some of the children even end up
having relationships with 1/2 brothers / sisters they never knew they had.
Also with all the mucked up families, the children must get confused when
mummy meets another partner, then that relationship falls through and she is on
to the next one.
No wonder why the children suffer.
Fortunately my children have been in a steady family set up for years.
I see your point but I’m a farther that lost everything but I’m still doing well working as hard as I can and my little girl no matter what loves her daddy because of the love and care and desiplen I show for her
mother might have done things like you have rightly stated but doesn’t mean that every child will be like that so please don’t place every child and mother and father the same.
Generally it’s not the mother but the father that is in many relationships! Majority of mothers don’t introduce their children to partners for quite a few months, yet fathers cancel seeing their children because they are constantly dating new women. Statistics actually show that children aren’t worse off when parents aren’t together for the sake of their children but rather they are more likely to be unhappy when parents stay together. It’s ok for a man to father numerous children and not provide for their children yet the mother is one that you men Villainise. A mother will naturally look after and Nurture her children as well as be a doctor, teacher, carer, cook, taxi driver, bank naming just a few. This is about education In schools
Well no improvement considering Hampshire took over Island Schools from the IW education authority to bring up the standard quite incredible really.
You cant educate pork.
The primary schools in Ryde are horrifically bad. Abusive teachers, terrible disciplinary procedures and they’re just generally mediocre. Worse still is that they’re self governing. That’s why they’re poor. Their priorities are inverse. It is dire and I’m glad there’s evidence of their failings.
So why do we let Hampshire take millions of our council tax to run education here , when they are failing our children.
The brainless parents are to blame. Too many of them are either glued to their phone, worried about their own mental health(oh boo hoo!)or smoking weed to give a toss about their childs welfare. A mast majority of these poor kids are suffering due to lazy, unfit parents.
When children are in school it is down to the teachers to ensure they teach what is required to get the children through school being able to read and write along with all the other subjects, when the children go home it’s is then down to the parents to take over, so it is not entirely the parents fault at the end of the day it is a shared responsibility
Agreed many parents are not good at their responsibilities .But teachers are not able to teach due to the other work expected of them, entering stuff on Arbor, Google classroom, lesson planner, individual education plans, training, homework, detentions, be abused by parents, school uniform etc etc,in my day teachers just taught ,not all the other stuff that tries to prove they teach. Why do you think so many are leaving. We are failing kid’s who deserve better – they are our future workers to pay taxes to look after us all.
Agree. Often it’s the quality of the headteacher and their teaching philosophy which makes or breaks a school.
When I went to school aged 5 I could tell the time, read and write to a reasonable level and knew my times tables from 1 to 12. Now kids are leaving school not able to do any of this.Thank you Mum you did me proud
So it’s nothing to do with the teachers, their leaders or teaching standards? Just the parents. No wonder things are slow to change.
Standards have dropped since Covid, schools refuse to do practical lessons still!
Statistics and more statistics
I am shocked how many island children are vaping.
and that some parents allow it!
