Isle of Wight band Wet Leg’s eponymous debut album has been shortlisted as an Album of the Year for the 2022 Mercury Prize and their music has been endorsed by none other than former US President Barack Obama.
Released in April following a string of hit singles, Wet Leg (the album) charted at Number 1 and has already become the biggest selling UK debut for the first half of the year. The duo of Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers have also clocked up over 120 million streams globally and are currently performing in sold-out live shows across the world.
Wet Leg have also been nominated in 2 categories at the 2022 Aim Awards, including UK Independent Breakthrough and Best Independent Track for their debut single “Chaise Longue”, released just over a year ago.
It has also been revealed that former US President Barack Obama is a Wet Leg fan. Obama has included the Wet Leg song Angelica on his 2022 summer playlist together with hits from the likes of Beyonce, Harry Styles, Bruce Springsteen and Burna Boy.
Wet Leg responded by tweeting:
“First the Mercury nomination… and now this?!”
Every year, I get excited to share my summer playlist because I learn about so many new artists from your replies—it’s an example of how music really can bring us all together.
Here’s what I’ve been listening to this summer. What songs would you add? pic.twitter.com/9OgPq0SRy4

Brilliant to hear and see Island talent not going to waste…
Nice to see someone is not going down the criminal path on the island for once.
If what they produce is music or art ……. I am a three headed donkey.
You certainly are !
