Police on the Isle of Wight are inviting Islanders to help form a Speed Watch scheme locally.
Speeding is an issue regularly raised with officers by communities across the Island, so an open call for volunteers to help resolve the situation has been issued.
Such schemes see volunteer members of the public use equipment that can monitor the speed of traffic, with details recorded and added to a database. Letters are then sent out to speeding motorists by the Police as a warning.
Anyone interested in taking part in a Speed Watch scheme is asked to email the Citizen’s in Policing Co-Ordinator, Holly Deacon, by emailing [email protected].

this is all we need are they going to nick the ones doing 20mph in a 60
Is there a community group that monitors terrible drivers that are incompetent of driving safely? Smoking, drink & drugs and old people who can barely see 2 foot in front of them but own a massive car?
Free labour more like
No Jon, this is not free labour. Speeding on the island is a big problem. Way too many wanna be racers who think they can drive. Any idiot can drive fast but they don’t seem to factor in the ‘safely’ part. Got the Tory Government to thank for getting rid of 20,000 police officers. Thanks for nothing Mrs T May!
Speed watch ,I feel too many people go too slow . If it says 30 they do 20 , eyes tested be good , as clearly most can not see the signs
Since driving I’ve noticed age 60+ drive 30mph in a 20 zone, 40mph in a 30 zone, then you get to middle road and they do 40mph so you overtake them and they get angry……..they speed in built up areas but then under speed on nation speed limits…..but there are also young drivers who need taking off the road aswell
Speed signs are a limit not a target and it does not say drive at this speed.
Great Preston Road Ryde is Speedway for Motorists
EVERY day around 4, a motor bike goes down the footpath off of Great Preston road which joins pig leg lane.
The council won’t put up barriers as it would prevent prams and cycles using it, and the police will do nothing UNTIL someone is hurt, school kids and the elderly walking dogs use this.
Now, authorities do NOTHING, and low life know it.
What is needed is a few motorcycle police patrol men/women.
We dont appear to have any on the island.
Mr Gurd comes to mind, if you did wrong – you were nicked! O, how I wish we had him now!
Set up on the main road through Brading any time after 5am and you’ll be needing a lot of envelopes for those warning letters!
Great.
So basically, the Police can’t be bothered to make the effort to do one of their primary road safety tasks, and want to ‘farm it out’ to well meaning amateurs!
Just how much was the increase to the Police precept?!
Do you recall the Tory Government getting rid of 20,000 police officers? As speeding is a very big problem on this island, everyone should be grateful for this iniative. If not, why not? Our over stretch officers on the island have to do dealing with all the other rubbish that goes on.
I think people raising this as an issue with police are perhaps expecting the police to do something about it, because its their job…
Didn’t they do this some years ago but it fell by the wayside?
People have more important things to do
I thought the police were short of funds.
Thats why they want volunteers, as if our council tax hasn’t gone up enough
What is going on? We should not be doing the job of the Police. This country and our Island have totally lost it.
There are no rules on the Island.
If I had a £1 every time a motor turned right into West Street Brading off of
The High Street where there is clearly a NO RIGHT TURN SIGN
I would be a millionaire
All they need is a Camera or Police waiting round the corner in West Street to catch the Law Breakers
You can turn right from the high street to west Street. The signs are there to stop people turning right at the crossing and going up the mall.
how about dealing with those ‘really kind’ drivers that stop on main roads with traffic behind to let people out of side roads.. Quarr abbey just after that bend towards ryde, nearly shunted a car the other day as they stamped on the brakes, nothing behind me either.
Maybe you were to close to the car in front if you nearly hit it, read Highway Code for stopping distance oh and it doesn’t matter nothing behind you it’s what is front of you that matters
i was doing forty on a bike with plenty of distance, i had a feeling the driver much like yourself would not look and just brake, its a big problem lets hope it never happens to you and your weeny supporters…….
Bring back the Dave Gurd type copper, he knew exactly where to hide to catch all the speeders.
Speed limits are a maximum, not a target, and a lower speed may be more appropriate depending on the road layout, traffic and weather conditions.
So your be happy behind someone in a 60mph doing 20 mph the roads are dry the sun is out and when they get to a 40 mph and drop to 10-15 mph that’s ok then
It would be of more USE, if instead of the public ‘spotting’ the speeders and other law breakers’ IF INSTEAD, the public could replace the judges and magistrates, and decide the sentence for all law breakers.
First we would have to build larger jails which could be funded by meaningful fines for non prison offences.
It occurs to me that amateur volunteers using equipment that they may or may not have properly checked and calibrated before use and adding information into an official database that the police will then take action on is an excellent way of increasing formal complaints, GDPR issues and possible legal proceedings.
Where can I read the Chief Constable and new PCC’s policy on this?
Oi Timmy I’m 60 + but I drive to the speed limit , Conditions , etc , don’t tar us all with the same brush .
I’m just expressing what I’ve seen with my own eyes and experiences =)
Don’t think the public should be doing
This as there is some that think they own the island and think there responsible for there community and personally think it will cause to much trouble also it’s not just speed it is bad driving / driving with due care a attention that needs to be tackled
Can I have my precept back which I pay for the police with if I do this?
No but you can take bribes NOT to report people.
My apologies, his named was David Gurd.
On the 2 occasions I met him I did not ask for his first name.
