The coronavirus contact tracing app, which is currently being trialled on the Isle of Wight, has seen over 70,000 downloads to date, it has been announced.
Although not all of the downloads are thought to be from the Isle of Wight, the number represents a significant achievement with tens of thousands of Island residents supporting the national effort to move out of the coronavirus crisis.
Transport Secretary Grants Shapps announced in yesterday’s (Thursday’s) daily briefing that 72,300 downloads have been recorded through the App Store and Google Play store.
Moving forward, those arriving in the UK will soon be asked to download the app as part of the nationwide rollout later this month.
Bob Seely MP has said:
“The latest download figures announced live at the 5pm Daily Briefing show the very strong engagement and response from the Island.
“Not all the 73k or so downloads will be Islanders, and some Islanders have downloaded more than once, but the consensus is that the Island has downloaded the app in significant numbers, and our use will drive understanding of it.
“It’s important to remember that the Trace & Test programme is not only about the app, but about the entire programme to keep us safe. By getting this Trace and Test programme early, we have kept Islanders safer, earlier.
“In addition, the Island is helping the NHS with both technical but also real-world solutions to make sure the app and the Trace and Test scheme can help the rest of the UK.
“We need to keep downloading the app, making sure it is on, keep sending feedback on the feedback form and by doing that, help the rest of the UK to support the NHS – and care homes – and to stay healthy.”

so they cant tell us the true figure for the island who are using the app come on bob get your finger out and tell us the true figure
Ha ha ha , a roaring success ,like I said it would. Ok roll it out across the U.K.! Don’t people get it? It doesn’t matter if it works,or it’s a success or not, they are going to get this going. It’s there first step on the ladder! Watch out!
Their
The scammers are already onto it, and using it to con people. As reported on IW radio
so how many people have tried to down load it to find it wont work????and are these included in the figure??
As a cure is now seemingly unlikely to ever be found as experts say CV, like the common cold, will be unlikely to either give immunity even if you have ‘had’ it, and for the same reason as it ‘changes’ like the cold, making a vaccine unlikely, then we will all likely get this at some point.
So imo, avoiding CV now no vaccine is likely to ever be found is like trying to dodge old age. Yes you can eat healthy, exercise, live a sedate life, have face lifts etc. BUT eventually you will look and be old, whatever you worry, fuss, spend and do over the years, so don’t bother.
Just enjoy now time, otherwise you will miss out on real lifes pleasures trying to prolong the inevitable. Only my opinion, not fact.
How selfish! And dangerous. You could carry the virus and infect other people. It is your attitude that is sending the figures higher on this island. People that don’t obey the rules should be locked up. That’s for other people’s sake. If you cannot care about yourself, obey the rules for other people’s sake!
Absolute rubbish bending the numbers in the vain hope that we all fall into the trap there is not that many smart phones able to get the app let alone download it on the island
India has just made mandatory tracking app. If the people dont download it,then the freedom of movement is limited. But hey, I’m just a conspiracy person talking rubbish, really?
I wish the app to detect if you’ve been in contact with these complete idiots planning to protest against their liberty rights on Saturday! I be,I’ve they must all have had partial or complete lobotomies as none of them understand the term global pandemic.
I am truly struggling to understand how people are benahving currently. It has brought out the inane selfish and disturbingly ugly side to a lot of people. I know we all say we are all together in this but clearly there are those without tv, radios and socialmedia that are just not getting it! I be trying nine of them have people they know and love die from this vile disease. How selfish and thick can they be to ignore all of the death around just because they aren’t allowed to go to the pub or meet in their disgusting groups to do what they do for a few months. They’ll be the Ines making this lockdown continue on and on…. I hate thick people!
there are countless things that can kill you in an instant – doesn’t mean you should hide away indoors – people are not going to sit indoors on a nice sunny day – forget it – they are going out and as the days go by, more and more will. – If you are so worried then stay indoors – do not expect everyone else to though
Selfish devil – you are endangering other people’s lives and should be locked up! Some people have to go out for food etc and don’t expect someone as selfish as you to endanger their lives. I have to go out. You’re too much of a coward to even put your name, but you are probably a man without intelligence. I try not to think that you are just bad through and through.
What alot of people need to remember is we are all in the end human.
There are going to be people that really struggle to stay indoors for an unknown period of time as it is not in there nature to do so, it is really difficult.
But instead of making those people out to be bad people how about we try and encourage them to think of the bigger picture.
I’m no fan of this app and I do have my opinion of it but that’s just my opinion not anyone else’s.
But if people just used a tiny amount of common sense you can go and see other people just along as you make sure you are TWO METRES apart, and I know I’m going to get people saying its a load of govt lies and they are making it out to be worse than it is but really its not worth the risk.
Honestly I know it’s hard and I know it feels like our freedom is being taken away but just remember that one day things will get better and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel, be kind and thoughtful to each other, respect other peoples views and opinions.
Just help each other out and work together and we will get through this stressful and uncertain time.
Nothing will work while people on the island disobey the rules. Some people come far to close and if you say anything, it’s like “Yer, yer yer.” They are being so selfish and endangering other people. In some cases they could quite well be murderers if they infect someone and that someone dies. Tesco staff are among the worst offenders. They walk by very close, pushing those great big things they use for filling the shelves. Perhaps they think that if they hurry by it doesn’t count, but if they are breathing, it counts!
