Whilst the annual Hants and Dorset rowing regattas have been postponed until at least July, clubs across the Isle of Wight collaborated last Saturday to ensure Island rowers could enjoy some competitive experience, many for the first time, in the first of a series of pre-season time trials on the River Medina.
In glorious sunshine and perfect conditions, all Ryde Rowing Club, Newport Rowing Club and Shanklin & Sandown Rowing Club were well-represented in a variety of boats.
Fastest time in Division 1 was from single sculler Austin Smith (Ryde) with Kayleigh Batchelor (Shanklin) in 2nd and the Ryde J16 Coxed Four 3rd. Austin then teamed up with brother Joel to win Division 2 in the double scull, with Newport’s Matt Whishaw 2nd and the Shanklin Junior Ladies Four close behind.
However, there were some promising performances across all clubs. Competing in a range of ages, boats and categories, the rowers times providing benchmarks for future improvement and an invaluable experience of racing over progressively more challenging courses.
