Island Roads will carry out a significant carriageway improvement scheme on Fairlee Road in Newport from tomorrow (Thursday).
Around 4,000 sqm of new surfacing will be laid in the section between the Roundhouse and Medina College over 4 nights, starting on Thursday.
This section of Fairlee Road will be closed between 19:30 and 06:30 with traffic diverted via Staplers Road. The work is being carried out overnight to minimise disruption.
The project is 1 of several schedules for the Autumn so as to avoid the busy summer months when the road network is at its busiest.
Island Roads is this week also undertaking a highway improvement scheme on the Middle Road outside Calbourne Mill and is due to undertake further road improvement on the approach to the Merrie Gardens Roundabout at Lake. This scheme will be overnight – again to minimise disruption – on 4th October only.
All schemes are subject to disruption for various reasons including inclement weather.
An Island Roads spokesperson has said:
“Our planned highway improvement work tends to scale back in the high summer months as that is when the network is at its busiest and we need to be sensitive to the needs of the Island’s tourism industry.
“While we make every effort to minimise disruption, it is just not possible to undertake this work without causing some impact on residents and the travelling public, so we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience these improvements will cause.”

Island roads sure do know how to waste money. Last spring they spent who knows how much on patching up that part of Fairlee when it could have been resurfaced then. That stretch of road is arguably 1 of the busiest on the island yet it’s taken this long to fix. It would be interesting to know how much was wasted on the patch up job and then how much will be spent now.
So true..another bodge up job by them.and it’s being completed overnight that will be their excuse they couldn’t see it..
Ask I V Searle, they love tarmac so I imagine they know the cost of it
I’m sure that at a recent Island Roads and residents meeting, when quizzed about why they didn’t work at night, an Island roads representative stated ‘it wasn’t their policy to work overnight’
And yet…….
Makes you wonder why our Council is about to declare bankruptcy? Ahh no it doesn’t “Island roads run this Island and they will break it as well”!.
Ah yes, now what was the reason? Something about that water that has been leaking out for 10+ years? That water that was absolutely nothing to do with Southern Water. That water leak that seems to have been almost fixed recently by Southern Water?
No leaks here guv.
These companies treat all of us as mugs and I can remember a ‘council’ person stating that the Fairlee Road was not the busiest Road on the Island. It is only ‘one’ of the busiest? Find the busiest?
Summer months!!!! I think we had a few warm days, if I remember
You should have read the comments here about any works planned for summer 😉
People were so angry that it’ll happen right during school holiday, festivals, tourists etc. etc.
You can’t win – whatever date you pick, someone will moan 😀
Another bodge job on the cards.
I just hope that they make a better job of it this time around as the work they did before was a disgrace. Why don’t they just resurface the entire road as it certainly needs it.
They have a good sense of humour though when they say that they try to “minimise disruption”. That’s not our view of this woeful company.
Oh, it’s going to take all the fun out of swerving to avoid the dips of doom. Will they just stick a few patches on like they’ve done everywhere else?
Lol but I don’t drive.
Good luck to anyone using that road while these works are carried out as although they are doing the works overnight, you can bet there will be traffic lights up and/or diversions when they aren’t working through the day.
