Letter to the editor – 30th June 2021
I have great concerns about this regeneration programme in particular the moving of the taxi rank outside residential and retail premises.
Article continues below this advertisement My concerns are the health issues for residents and retail premises along the front – this is not in line with Government guidelines regarding using open spaces for eating out. This incudes the mental health issues for all concerned, the pollution caused by these vehicles, the lack of parking for disabled persons using the premises and also the potential for damage to property in the evenings from drunks, let alone the vomit and urinating in door ways.
I have lived many places in my life time and never have I come across anything so stupid and thoughtless.

We could all go there on a saturday night and enjoy the Tremeloes.
Erm..its a bus station! Railway Station, and Taxi rank, has been for about 160 years. A bit younger than one pier and a bit older than the other two. One disabled parking place removed but there is ample parking within one minute walk, slowly. As for the vomit, and Urinating in doorways thats a separate issue that pales into insignificance compared to such places, as for example, Bournemouth. The hotels and bars on the front are not into that clientele.
I think he is referring to the proposed rank on the other side, in front of The Lud, Hong Kong Express etc.

Imo, it’s laughable to call it regeneration when it’s essentially a new bus station and bus priority system.
And who would want a taxi rank right outside their home/restaurant?
I agree with the taxi rank comment , a friend has ryde taxi’s parking outside her home on the Esplanade, they take over the pay and display spaces and never pay, they are making the area just like home with cigarette ends thrown on the road plus used paper tissues and are a hazard if you are entering her car park as they just pull out when they get a call.
What is disgusting though is the members of the public who fail to pay get a fine but never that lot.
What a total waste of public money. Just leave well alone. There is nothing wrong with just leaving it as it is!
Yep, couldn’t agree more,why fix it if it ain’t broke,and the main reason they should leave well alone is its 1950’s original rectro look , they ruined Newport bus station, this ain’t Croydon, it is the little things like this that makes the island special.
