GROUPS BATTLE THE WET WEATHER FOR ISLE OF WIGHT DAY COASTLINE CLEAN UP

Over 40 Red Funnel staff members and their families joined Islanders in taking part in the biggest-ever organised clean up of the Island’s coastline at the weekend.

Groups across the Isle of Wight battled the wet weather to mark Isle of Wight Day, which was also celebrated with a parade in Cowes.

Red Funnel’s efforts were concentrated on Ventnor and Steephill Cove where a large quantity of plastic and other rubbish was removed by the volunteers who were provided with everything they needed, including gloves and recyclable rubbish bags.

The amount of plastic found highlights the scale of the problem facing the marine environment and demonstrates what can be achieved by a coordinated approach.

It is reported that 5,000 plastic items are found per mile of beach in the UK. That means there is an estimated 335,000 plastic items spanning across the Isle of Wight’s 67 mile coastline.
