New statistics from the Home Office show that firefighters on the Isle of Wight are, on average, being called to 19 lift rescues every single year.
Over the past decade, between January 2011 and December 2020, a total of 190 lift rescues have been attended by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Often the call outs are to residential and care homes where lifts are commonplace for the elderly and infirm. The Shanklin Cliff Lift is also regularly visited by emergency crews.
In 2020, fire crews were called out to just 8 lift rescues – the 50% reduction in the yearly average number of call-outs most likely attributable to the COVID pandemic.
Incidents of people getting trapped inside lifts is a real problem across the country with around 12,000 shouts a year for fire services nationwide.
