Planning permission is being sought to develop a new fuel depot on land at the Island Technology Park between Whippingham and East Cowes.
Certas Energy has submitted an application as it seeks to install 3x 125,000-litre fuel tanks between GKN Aerospace and the CECAMM building off the main road in and out of East Cowes.
Large tankers would transport the fuel across the Solent via ferry before unloading at the new depot. Smaller tankers would then refill to deliver fuel to customers across the Isle of Wight. Up to 5 delivery tankers would be stored at the site, which looks set to be developed to the rear of the CECAMM building.
A 151.2sqm office building is also proposed alongside a car park for 8 cars.
This application comes less than a year after the Isle of Wight Fuels depot at Kingston, also in East Cowes, was closed. To compare the 2 sites, Kingston could store 3 million litres of fuel whilst this new site will store 375,000 litres, if approved.
Last month Island Echo reported concerns from the local community as Certas began using a small piece of land next to the town’s fire station to store tankers.

Hardly “technology” is it?
There would be a MAJOR issue ‘IF’ there was a spillage onto or near the road as its the ONLY MAIN road into East Cowes, we all know how much of a nightmare its been with local roadworks atm.
Its close poximity to GKN, Local Housing, College and being inbetween two Schools is a potential hazard. It has the similar issues as the York Ave site proposal from last month, just some Red Flags thats should be highlighted.
The tanks will be bunded probably double skin as well and the Safety will be checked by the planning.
You trust IW Council Planning???
There must be a story behind Island Fuels’ decision to vacate their Kingston terminal, despite the abandoned Saunders Way being completed with that in mind, but no-one’s digging. And now the Harbour Commission want to “develope” the site. Well, well.
Meanwhile IWCouncil want to build yet another unwanted Tech park in West Cowes.
100 ways to waste our money.
Probably the slow creep of Riverside homes, all the way to Folly , and then beyond. Island Harbour is growing by the year and begs to be connected , and I believe there were plans to develop the old Saro site. Not sure what’s happened there tho.
